For gameplay balance, we shouldn't have casters being capable of equipping tanking gear to have higher armor values, or MNKs/DRGs having complete freedom of mixing their gear to have the perfect stat balance or more hp (in the monk's case).
As been mentioned, there's the early level DoW stuff that just throws out the window anything about a PAL/WAR being this armored up class.

I do like my suggestion though, as it makes more glamouring options, while making people work for it. Want to wear that other classes outfit (even just part of it)? Have to get that class to 50!

Can always make it so AF armor isn't allowed.

    Nooooooooo...! *insert tantrum .gif* lol

Already with the swim suits and snowman, I know it is now an argument of how deep the dagger digs but SE's games have clear image. Even the classless FF games have a sense to their character design (bosses generally excluded). Their physical and cloth appearance may not be 'realistic' fantasy but there is a code to their culmination of appearance that describes the character even though it follows few real rules. Forcing a near realistic gear code would force the game to at least be on one point bringing semblance to other FFs (in ARR's case a near sloppy gear code), releasing the whole system would further forgo what could keep ARR classically to a FF prescription. Again, already breaking stuff by having underwear knights but half way through seppuku and I don't want to twist the knife.

/unpopular opinion, drops mic on stage xD

I understand everyone's concerns about the immersion of the world but with more options obviously come the retarded players who will attempt to create the most stupid of combinations to induce laughter and attention. But the actions of a few should not hinder on the creative of the many. And besides... The worst possible combinations and outfits are already available with the bikinis and what not. What is mostly class locked is the cool looking gear that could make great costumes instead of ridiculous ones.

Besides... Final Fantasy is not the best example of immersion of the fantasy world. In fact, it's the complete opposite which makes it even better in my opinion. Many characters have outfits and armors that don't fit their envisioned class and that is what makes these characters so unique and interesting. I can list a few examples of very unique designs vis a vis their classes.

Celes: Rune Knight in a jumpsuit with metal pauldrons.

Golbez: Black Mage in full plate armor.

Quina: Blue Mage in a cook outfit.

Kuja: Mage with barely any clothes but obviously plate boots.

    The list goes on!

I guess what I'm trying to say is don't look the lack of restrictions as an automatic immersion breaking because of your fear of the freedom that would bring. Look at all the games you've played who have but only a minimum of gear restriction! I am pretty certain you came up with many awesome designs and combinations yourselves and although nonrestrictive, no immersion was broken in the process. Rare are the players who will fancy a girly dress for their tank unless its for a good laugh or don't take the role-playing game seriously. Otherwise, they would much rather enjoy a cool looking character playing their favorite class.

Take myself for example. I want to design an Arabic assassin that would take some parts of potentially exclusive monk gear to add sashes and other gold ornaments while revealing some skin to represent the harsh climates of the desert(and my kitty sexiness of course ;3c). Something that would eventually make me look like this but more FF-like and miqo'te-like.

I doubt my idea would break the vision or immersion and at the same time, I would have brought my own personal little touch to my character and the world of Eorzea, a world built by its inhabitants.

I almost completely agree with you Hito-Shura and think you've done an excellent job stating your case and directing your thread. Good job. I am, however, against any and all restrictions. Kind of said it yourself in an indirect way......

I read the whole thread and this part of your statement really resonated with me. It is the original "opposite rpg" in a lot of ways lol. Why isn't the mage wearing a robe? Cuz final fantasy. Why is that guy shooting a gun at a dragon? Cuz final fantasy.

I started to realize after reading the entirety of this thread that players can't change the image of the game no matter how hard they'd try. Everything in game still looks very much like final fantasy and probably always will. Square has worked hard through the years developing this image and everything in the game reflects this.

In other words, a mage wearing an armor top and a bikini bottom will still look like a mage wearing an armor top and a bikini bottom in final fantasy.

It makes me sad that these threads pop up and then fall away so quickly. But I guess everything has been said. I just don't want the devs to continue to ignore this issue.

    Rebuttal: does it matter?
The original art direction of this game as a detailed and naturalistic reflection of late Renaissance to early Colonial hand crafted design decided to pirouette straight into wacky tacky land with the introduction of Primal gear. Any artistic integrity they wanted me to respect has been chipped away with every event they added, turning to little more than dust with the fantastic King Slime hat. So a mage looks like a monk. Is that any worse than a warrior that looks like a sandal wearing pumpkin bikini snow santa?
