He didn't say "I'm rejecting your advice.", but he was given the advice to do his job quests to get the AF gear and buy cheap accessories that will help him. His profile has updated, he has gained a level and he hasn't gotten any of the gear he was suggested to get, not even the AF which is given pretty much for free, 4 pieces at level 45.

That is not following the advice he was given. It doesn't even take long to do the quest.

Like i said, He didn't reject it. But damn, its only been a day!!! Now if he came back sometime next week complaining about the same thing, then yes by all means, but seriously, not everybody gonna do things as fast as everybody else. Even if he did buy new gear, he said he was already on the MB when he was reading everybody's advice. Give the dude a chance. Man yall like sharks. And this is why its hard for newbies to get help, because if they don't do as you guys say when you say, they get attacked, even if they themselves asked for help. Yes he gained a lvl, don't even know how close he was to gaining that lvl. turn in a quest, gain a lvl. Yall judge to much.

I have a Mi'Quote tank which makes life difficult for maintaining aggro but here is best new player(me) advice:

Once you use Shield Lob and establish pull run a little toward the encroaching group and hit flash, then pull back to give yourself some breathing room.

As you step back you should start to see which enemies are taking the most damage from your pull list. Immediately target that enemy that is taking the most damage with Shield Lob and go to town.

If the damage is spread out more you just have to alternate repeated use of flash while doing your full combo on the weakest monster.

If it is a slower group you can buy yourself time by stunning a couple monsters to start and then flashing again until a main target emerges.

Obviously, as noted above, top gear for STR and Shield Oath will be essential at higher levels; I've tried with Sword Oath and it was a mad house.

I haven't run with two high-level ninjas so I'll have to get back to you on how that works out ;n_n

For those of you who are wondering, all I did so far today was run one low-level duty roulette. That's all I've done. I don't need to level any higher but why waste a daily? Especially when you get bonus stat points to allocate on each level, and get to help beginners.

I am not ignoring anyone's advice, I just haven't had time today yet to work through the quests, I do plan on doing them.

Just to show you why the level you are seeing does not reflect actual progression. For today's DR I was dropped into Tam-Tara Deepcroft Normal. I received 3 commendations - and 254,453 EXP in less than 45 minutes. However, my "true player level" progression is really around level 35-40 as I will readily admit, so I kindly request you consider that in your expectations, and not base it on the hyper-inflated class level.

All of us were new once, but there's a huge difference between someone who cares about learning his job and someone who doesn't. The ones who doesn't care reach max level and still have no idea of what they're supposed to be doing.

I also like to show respect to the people I'm gonna be grouping with in the DF by being prepared, knowing the encounters and with gear. I didn't unlock my PLD Relic until I felt I was ready to tank for 7 strangers, so I didn't go until I was ilvl 96, all because I didn't want to waste the time of 7 other players, after all we're all paying a monthly fee. But hey, respect is overrated! Let's just go in with no idea of what to do, upset everyone and have them queue again, after all, the average queue for a DPS is 40 minutes.

Trying to understand what I was doing incorrectly, is the exact reason I made this thread. Because contrary to Hyunckel and Riviere's assumptions, I do care about being an effective player and not holding my group back. Yes, I have been reading guides, and asking friends on Twitter, and asked here on the forums because isn't this the official place where you can ask people for advice? If I planned on being carried in every single dungeon to troll people, why would I ask at all?

It is not fun to be stuck in an instance for 90 minutes when you can clear previous ones in half the time. Not fun for anyone even if you don't have a queue time.

Like you, Riviere, I didn't begin the Qarn quest until I felt I was ready to try the next level. Each day, even if I didn't have much time to play other content, I queued low-level roulette once per day for weeks. I did Sastasha, Tamtara and Haukke Manor so many times, and thanks to other players teaching in the dungeon, and some online guides, I learned how to keep aggro and have the party beat them on the first run.

Doing the low level DRs also skyrocketed my PLD level by a free level every 2-3 days.

Not very long ago I didn't know about stacking mobs or buffs multiplying enmity or why marking was important. Today I know and practice: flash twice, group mobs together for aoe, pull with shield lob, but don't use shield lob in melee, don't let GCD idle, preload combos, pop Fight or Flight cooldown for extra enmity. On my most recent run, a new person came into Tamtara, so I made sure to tell them what marking is and explained how some adds like Inconspicuous Imp can be more important to grab, then I made sure to mark the Imp when it spawned.

Can you believe the first time I marked a mob for a party was two days ago? I hope I can continue learning.

As mentioned in the first post, I suspected that gear deficiency could be affecting my aggro, but I wasn't sure the best approach to obtaining it therefore I decided to ask the forums. Most players were telling me that VIT should be the primary focus for tanks, therefore, my original focus was on leveling fast to get stat points to allocate VIT and increase my HP to maximum. Once I failed Qarn and realized there was a problem, my first instinct was to check the Market Board. Tbh I was really hoping that if I farmed low-level at 50 and saved up a lot of gil or tomes, I could trade with players or redeem tomes for the best stuff. Turns out that the best items actually can't be purchased, they come from untradable drops.

I have the Lv45 Paladin job quest started, probably will have it completed tomorrow. I'll be taking a break from duty roulettes on PLD, I'll put the daily exp boost on CNJ instead so I can get stoneskin etc.

How did I equip a new shield and gain a level? I bought it from the markets then did my daily DR habit then logged off last night. I didn't unlock Dzemael Darkhold, so I did not enter into DD.

For everyone who has been offering advice and understanding so far, thank you again.

When you add in Challenge Log with 120k for both dungeon challenges, 140k for FATEs, even 50k for commendations... I basically gained 10 levels without a single quest. You can gain half a level a day or more... I might even be level 50 by Saturday.

update: amber ring is on MB for 5,500 gil, Vitality +6, Parry +10. might just get two of those, since I've been hearing that VIT (Max HP) is what tanks need to focus on the most.
Okay...but even so, you can do your PLD job story arc. It won't unlock extra dungeons/or spoil your mainstoryline...but it WILL give you more skills (skills you'll need as you progress via the main storyline anyway), and you'll have, by completing your level 45 job quest have:
    -A new head
    -New Hands
    -New Legs
    -New Feet

If you've done any fates/depending on your Grand Company rank, you should be able to buy a decent weapon (shield) with Grand Company Seals that'll cover you. For Free.
As far as the MB's for your accessories....just buy NQ items. WHen you're done with them, Spirit Bond them...you actually might get your gil spent back (if you're lucky)

But, as I have an alt on excali:
Heliodor Earring (ilvl 39): NQ selling for less than 1100gil
Heliodor Bracelet (ilvl 38): Nq selling for 2000gil
Heliodor Ring (ilvl 39): 1 NQ selling for 5000gil (as it is the weekend, watch boards, likely more will list)
Heliodor Choker (ilvl 38): Currently no NQ's on sale, but they seem to be listing for around 5000gil when available. Still you could grab a Garnet Choker (NQ at 4K) and/or a Mythril Gorget (NQ for 2K) and still be better off.
High Mythril Plate belt (ilvl 44) Currently NQ's are selling for about 500gil ea.
so for under 15K (which should be covered by the daily roulette bonuses you get as tank), you can get accessories for your guy.

Even a Sentinel Cuirass will only set you back about 16K.

Really, that's cheap for MB gear. (and the Cuirass will last you until you can get your PLD body at level 50). Also the next best option (Mythril Haubergeon is 10K...and lower level...so really...Sent. Cuirass is better investment).

PS: if you lack the GC seals and/or the rank to get weapons for your level, the Cobalt Katzbalger is selling for 2.5K atm/ HQ Hoblin Scimitar's for 1K ea etc.

PPS: what you really don't want to know however is the prices for these items on my main server LOL LOL LOL. (way, way higher than excali overall...somethings are on par, most not so much).

If you feel confident enough with your skills and markings (when you found your path)...
Try to play a bit with the ingame macros! It will help to increase speed and marking things will make more fun...

Your problem OP is that you only did Low Level Duty Roulette and managed to level up so much, and getting zero gear upgrades, for so long, of course you'll be in trouble.

If you read your basic abilities and base stats' descriptions you would have seen that Vitality only increases HP and that (some of) your skills do increased enmity, which means... More enmity than they would do if you were not a tank, like... A dps. Yep the enmity you produce is based off the damage you output, that was logical wasn't it Increasing your HP is in no way gonna increase your enmity generation. Taking hits and survive is nice, if you can take them.

Now instead of doing Low Level Duty Roulette every day and get so much XP that your gear is outdated since 25 ago, you should have just followed your main quest and do it to get sent to areas of your level, then do the side quests there for easy XP (and get your quest rewarded gear FOR FREE), do your class quest (which gives you mandatory talents, skills & FREE GEAR at Lv45, which you would have known if you searched for information on your own instead of relying on others ^^), if all else fails, check the arms & armor menders next to the aetheryte of your highest level zone. Don't you have to repair your gear every now and then? Didn't you see they sell gear for like 2k gil at most?

You got plenty of advices in this thread, now it's time for you to learn it up => That is, if you really wanted to learn as you said, in which case you could have done so on your own like most of us did \(°o°)/

Now I'll take my leave, we all gave you enough advice to be a god of tanking. I'll check every now and then your armory profile to see if you improved your gear at all xD

There is a difference between searching for solutions on its own like a grownup, asking for help to solution specific problems (which is fine) and being spoonfed ^_^
