Cute DoL Familliars: A Gathering Companion

I really like this idea, this kind of companion would make gathering classes more appealing to everyone. Making the pet show the way to a node instead of the vage system that we have now would be really welcome.
Keeping the pets as a mere tool to help the DoL and not to use in battle would prevent it from being exploited in some way by a leveling party.

Unfortunately there are those who could exploit things like this, but being proactive is key. I'd say if some DoL decideds to party with a DoW or DoM then the pet would no longer engage in combat. Rather, the DoW & DoM would then be considered your active bodyguard and the pet would just do its basic gatherer functions.
