Everyones just s bad as each other here, everyones a hypocryte and I've been on forums much more polite, XIV does have the worse community i have ever experienced. Most likely due to the games status though.

You get trolls who troll the game, QQers who are upset and then asshats who just personally attack/insult other people for not liking something in the game, rather than just expressing their opinion about the topic instead of the person.

It will never end or change.

To me calling the community the worst ever sounds a hell a lot of trolling right there. Have you ever been on an MMO forum before? Besides the usual forum bickering that always takes place, especially after any major patch FFXIV's community is actually one of the best I've experienced among MMO's today. You'd have to go back to the early RoZ days of XI to find a community that could compete in my opinion.

At least on Selbina, maybe the antisocial crowd hangs out on Besaid /shrug

I tend to notice that most exchanges start off okay and quite civil. However, there are certain people (in any game's forum community) who live only to stir things up and/or who believe their opinion is "The One That Matters" and trumps all others; that once they've imparted their 'truth' on others, the thread is basically over and everyone should just shut up and agree with them. Sometimes those people start the threads in question, immediately dismissing or talking down to any who disagree with them, making you wonder if they realize they're on a "discussion forum".

I've seen folks actually tell people to leave their thread if they don't agree with the OP. The height of tolerance right there, let me tell ya.

That right there makes for a hostile environment, when people can't express a differing opinion without the OP blowing a gasket over it. If some people would simply realize that, however strongly they believe something, it's still only their opinion and others are going to disagree.. and it's okay that they do... I think that would help a lot. That is, of course, unless what's being presented is indeed verifiable fact that is true for everyone.

Unfortunately, that's not the case, it seems many are rather insecure in their opinions, thin-skinned against any counter-opinion and treat any disagreement as a personal attack. We've all seen the instances of people responding to perfectly reasonably presented counter-arguments by dismissing them as "trolling", I'm sure.

It would also help if more people would read others' posts more carefully and take in what they're actually trying to say, rather than ignore most of it, take comments out of context, ignore entire paragraphs of detail and clarification, and then cherry-pick one or two statements and bash someone for them. Or, they flat out put words in other people's mouths, attributing things to them that they never said, but arguing them as though they had (ie. strawman argument).

In all, if people could become more tolerant, more open-minded and stop being so quick to go on the defensive the moment they see a different opinion from their own being presented... It would help a lot.

For myself, I do my best to keep my posts civil... Unfortunately, my achilles heal in that effort is when I see people blatantly arguing their opinions as fact, inventing or misrepresenting information to suit their argument, or flat out ignoring evidence proving contrary to their claims. There's a point at which you have to say "Okay, I really thought "A" was the case, but in light of new information "B" that I didn't know before, I realize I was wrong". Instead, some people go on arguing "A" as though "B" had never come to their attention. When people blatantly misrepresent or ignore verifiable facts and proceeds to argue as though they weren't so... *that* annoys me. Though, that's the case in any situation, online or offline. I just *love* politicians, for example... >.>

In all, I agree... the forums overall would do well to kick back and relax a bit and realize we're all just people having a discussion about a common interest. No one's going to die or be injured from a different point-of-view.

Got closed down and just looking at the last few pages it became painfully clear why, but honestly guys how can we let things get that bad? When it doesn't even become about the topic and instead personal bickering.

I feel like instead of bashing each other for "Complaining"/"White Knighting"/"Trolling" we should just enter each thread trying to produce something of value to the respective topic.

We should act mature, polite, and civil like I hope many of you do to other people in real life. Not as many threads would get closed that way with good topics for discussion.

Just wanted to take a moment to say this. Thanks for listening guys

Not that I don't agree with you, but welcome to the internet. To quote Sir Alec Guinness, "...you'll never find a more wretched hive of scum and villainy."

Maybe Hiroshi Yamauchi was right about RPG players being nothing but depressed nerds who like to sit in their dark room playing slow games.

Look at the endless theorycraft threads of XI...
Sigh if only XIV had some of that depth so we'd have some in-game stuff to talk about.
Maybe when food effects arrive there will be some mystery to solve unless they spoil that system by streamlining it to just plain work.

People on the interwebz think they're internet "Tough Guys" and can do whatever the hell they want. As long as folks can hide behind a screen they will troll.

    this

the threads mostly getting closed are caused by a few specific people(dubont being one of them) who just like to insult people as their means of debate
and then it spirals out of control from there

then you got the gifthorse/force whatever hes calling his non banned names threads these days who get closed cuz they are bad to begin with
