You bring up the same annoyances I find targeting, but I have a different idea for targeting:

Hold down auto-run button to target party members with Up and Down running up and down the party list in sequence with the down button self-targeting first if it's pressed first, and Left and right for general proximity targeting friendly targets outside of party. While using the the Up and Down without holding down auto-run would select between only claimed mobs, and Left and Right selecting through unclaimed mobs.

Ideally, there would also be an option to switch whether holding down auto-run will cycle through PC or mob targets in the config menu so players may set the behaviour to the own preferences.

A good idea, I think lock-on button could be used for that, as I'm not sure about using the auto-run on targeting. I feel that people would end up running toward aggressive enemies from time to time.

    Easy fix ^^
Its kinda what Zuellni posted but a bit less functional for me.

I don't think its good that you have no way to target only enemies without changing modes on this scheme, (modes have the restrictive problem of not being intuitive nor fast) but that is surely faster for them to implement.

I agree with making it like FFXI. I played whm and blm in XI and had no issues healing the party as whm or blm and then targeting enemies. Party members could easily be targeted using up and down on the control pad and enemies/party by going side to side. Why cant it be this simple in XIV?
