Copypasta XIV - What were they thinking?

One of the major complaints regarding the initial release of Final Fantasy XIV; Eorzea was made up of copy-pasted chunks of zone, with a few set-pieces here and there.

I'm sure we all remember this video, and how many complaints were made against the game because of it.

Now, as any Final Fantasy fan knows, monsters in new titles may resemble their counterparts in earlier entries.

For example, the bombs in FF8 (1999) and FF9 (2000):

You can see that they're recognisable as the same creature, but they're clearly different models with different textures.

I was surprised to find that a huge number of monsters in ARR have been directly lifted from both XI (2002) and XII (2006).

Are there plans to replace any of these in the future? The XII models are of such a ridiculously low quality that they're actually distracting to see, in-game.

When I saw maps linked by some of my friends, I immediately noticed some of the layouts were reminiscent of Final Fantasy 12. Let's not forget that FF14 actually released before FF13 in a few places. None of this, nor what you will say will deter me from continuing to support this game (and their cash shop) however. I love the story too much to care about the models/etc. right now.

Well, it goes further than that. It does not bother me, it gives me that FF feeling.

What does bother me is the copy paste race animations. They say all the XIV races are different ones from XI, but why copy paste their run/walk/movements? The one thing they leave out is race specific ability animations. An Elvaan doing X ability would look different from a Hume doing the same ability. In XIV we don't have it (inb4 PS3 limitations) which takes away so much feel.

"We" asked for fast patches. I think the copy-paste route wasn't avoidable. Let's wait for 3.0 and see what mobs they'll bring.

PS: you can edit your post to bypass the 1000 character limit.

Chip here is absolutely right and has in no way coerced me into making this post.

Say what you want about "that FF feeling", but seeing all these (comparatively) low-quality models and textures in a game that once prided itself on having the best graphics since sliced cheese is pretty depressing.

You may want to boost your graphics settings or go to PS4/PC

I'm playing on PC with maximum settings. That doesn't change the fact that the stuff from XI/XII still looks like it did on PS2.

I am 100% OK with this, you missed Mandragoras, Skeletons, and that robot from Coil IV (original coil that one is from ffxiii) a few others to, but I do not mind it one bit!

I actually enjoyed seeing these creatures re-emerge from the depths from where they came to be regular fauna in this game

Good job Devs and damn good business move too

I am a winner, even though I sometimes fail.

SE wants to keep as much of the iconic image the Final Fantasy Franchise has created over the years. It’s one of the charms that makes it a “Final Fantasy”-game. With every Final Fantasy game, you would immediately recognize these iconic creatures.

However, even though they do re-use the same creatures, they make changes to each creature in order for it to fit the environment/lore/atmosphere of the game.

If we take the bomb as an example, let’s take a look at it’s “evolution” over the years:

    Final Fantasy II:

    Final Fantasy IV:

    Final Fantasy V:

    Final Fantasy VI:

    Final Fantasy VII:

    Final Fantasy VIII:

    Final Fantasy IX:

    Final Fantasy X:

    Final Fantasy XI:

    Final Fantasy XII:

    Final Fantasy XIII:

    Final Fantasy XIV:

Final Fantasy VII - Crisis Core:

    Final Fantasy Tactics:

    Final Fantasy Tactics - Advance:

    Final Fantasy The Crystal Chronicles:

Final Fantasy The Crystal Chronicles - Ring of Fates:

Final Fantasy The Crystal Chronicles - The Crystal Bearers:

    Final Fantasy Type-0:

As you can see, none of these bombs look exactly the same, but you still recognize them as the Final Fantasy Bomb creature. (^_^ ) There are versions of these creatures appear to be similar to the one that appeared in earlier games, but when you look more closely, you can find differences in each version.

The “Copy-paste Issue” was a big thing in 1.0, but that was all because of the terrain. I mean… I’ve never seen people complain that the Chocobo almost looks exactly the same in multiple Final Fantasy games. In fact, the biggest complaint i’ve seen was that the iconic creatures in FFXIII didn’t look like it’s predecessors in the slightest!
