FFXIV 1.0 was a steaming pile of crap. Yes they made it acceptable but it is still a fragment of what other major themeparks mmos are and extremely linear and limited in all aspects of the game.

They have to improve this game 2-3 fold and add lasting content before they get a pass from me. Game went from a solid F score to a C-.

Lets hope this expansion adds alot of stuff to do in this game that last more then 6 weeks.
    AMEN

They do nothing but replace content instead of EXPANDING it.

a year later we still only have 4 relevant raids. The rest are replaced with soloable gear. At this point in the game end game should look like...

    Group (ilvl 70) > CT1 (ilvl 80) > CT2 (ilvl 90) > Coil 1-5 (ilvl 100) > Coil 6-9 (ilvl 110) > Coil 10-13 (ilvl 120)

Instead group gear skips you right to the end and makes all previous turns irrelevant.

So I'm wrong? Group gear does not skip raid tiers making them irrelevant? DO explain.

    It's a loot piñata.

The piñata explodes showering you with gear....

Suddenly a new piñata appears and explodes. All the children throw the candy they were holding on the ground and embrace the new candy raining down on them.

    The cycle continues....

(sometimes the piñata explodes and hits you with candy so hard, it knocks the old candy out of your hand and leaves a bruise)

You're not wrong, but some people feel ARR does everything perfectly.

You just summed up FFXI at launch. (Not EU/US launch as that came after a revamp and an expansion).

Not every MMO is for everyone, not everyone will enjoy the same game. I'm having fun with the direction FFXIV is going, seems to me you aren't. If it gets to the point that I'm no longer having fun I wont post putting the game down, I'll just move on to something that does,

The problem is every game has followed the WoW solo cookie cutter model for the past 10 years. They would rather attract game purchases and 3 month subs then watch it burn to the ground and start something new. Then provide a quality game that will last 15+ years like the old QUALITY MMOs have.

Modern MMOs have no retention rate.

Buh? My wife and I are parents that have been playing MMOs for years and managed to raise a child and still play the game. You make it sound like parents who play neglect their kids.

Also, there is no such thing as too old to play an MMO. We're only in our 30s, but plenty of people in our old FC were 50+.

Better yet, bring Tanaka back and let him do his job until the end, don't rush him and give him resources.

There you will have a true and original FF MMO.

This quote here highlights everything that's wrong with the current direction of FFXIV. They removed Philosophy tomes, making Darklight gear irrelevant (and I daresay a lot harder to obtain a full set of), and have now done likewise with the old 'relic' AF gear. They've made harder dungeons, and dumped all of the 'old' content into one gigantic roulette which now covers 11 dungeons, when even previously it had eight! The newer 'extreme' roulette retains a mere 3 dungeons, by comparison.

Each patch seems to make yesterdays content meaningless or fast-tracks everyone to be on the same page. It makes large portions of the game utterly meaningless except as a brief stepping stone to the newer shiny content. I mean, did anyone honestly do repeat guildhests other than as a necessary evil for a quest?

People love to hate the old FFXIV 1.0, and with good reason. But they threw out a lot of the GOOD mechanics as well as the bad ones when they did the redesign. Lessons were learned, but not necessarily fully understood. This game still has a lot of potential, which is what keeps me playing beside the storyline and occasionally awesome sidequests. It's not too late for Yoshi to fix the big issues before FFXIV becomes stale and unappetising.
