One thing that's been brought up before that's pretty related: They could pretty easily make the world of Eorzea more dangerous, but it would be pointless without reward as well. Right now there isn't a lot to be gained by wandering the world and exploring other than the knowledge you went and saw the things. (Which okay XIV does have some pretty locations but still)

If you want things to feel "dangerous", go back to the original system used in EverQuest.

If you die, your gear drops at that spot and you are ported to your home point and have to get back to that spot while naked.

Granted, with 15+ gearsets in FFXIV its still only a minor annoyance, unless they also lock you out of changing classes or gear until you get the dropped set back.

Of course, modern MMO players would never accept such a change, they might want it to feel dangerous, but not at the risk of actually losing anything.....

Pretty sad though that I can make a new character and walk it to Mor Dhona without it getting killed once.

i don't think there needs to be a reward....but the world just seems too easily traveled. i'd love to have to brave through a forest full of stuff that could tear my character to bits if i'm not careful. i don't see why everything needs rewards attached to it though

The problem I have with the game is that it's too closed off, too many invisible walls, and zone lines every where. Would have love a seamless world, but I'm guessing due to PS3 limitations they had to do it like this.

They said that they made the first overworld easy because they didn't think a large part of their player base was accustomed to mmos and didnt want to scare them away, and that in Heavensward players will be used to it a bit more - so they would like to add a bit more danger to the world. One example was leaving your keyboard to get a drink and turning back around to find you died. How they do that could be by a number of ways though.

Would also like to see a bit more danger to the overworld, and more natural transportation with less emphasis on instant descaling transportation (teleports, but I'm not saying 45 FFXI minutes more or less like WoWs 25seconds-5 minutes depending on the distance)*. Anima system in 1.0 was nice because you 'could' fast travel but you'd attempt to measure it out, would have been nice to mix that with some other system (where is my working thanalan train ;_;?). Also talking about overworld, add some AI back - that was really great to watch and be a part of "oh what the, who cured me? /shout thanks!" *looks around some more, sees snurble staring up at you* "C-c-camate?".

But again, the expansion seems to address the scale and danger feeling - won't be like FFXI but I hope at least on par to WoW. The world (WoW) was open and did have short travel times (longer than FFXIV's), most monsters were easy like FFXIV's but there were a couple that'd wreck you (NMs and Elites) - FFXIV's NMs are now non-aggressive and there are no elite monsters so not comparable, that and world pvp added a bit of edge but FFXIV won't have that... I think.

tl;dr, it appears the devs have made some changes to the expansion areas to have more of this essence but still won't be as punishing as FFXI

*Could get some long travel times if you use a flight path from one side to the other, but with some forethought you generally stayed below those long times and the occasional time you didn't it just reminded you how big the area was.

World of Warcraft had a huge machine traveling the landscape when burning crusade came out however if they add something like this they would need to add it to all the zones and not the same mob. Anything else like heavy effects or mobs that don't leash back are an annoyance.

The impression I got from the interviews and such for Heavensward was the area is going to be MUCH larger. There is a big emphasis on flying mounts and I took from that to mean that we would need to fly from island to island, leaving teleport points for major cities instead of every camp or group. This will require you to be using your mounts more. These are previously unpopulated areas so there wont be the types of camps we see in the Eorzea areas we have now, we are essentially the pilgrims exploring NA. As for the danger part, I cant really say much to that. Little was revealed about mobs or behavior and the trailer they showed us of the flying mount looked like a test area and I didnt see any mobs and the islands they landed on were not that large. I can only assume that there will be much larger stretches of land.

Things I am curious about regarding Heavensward are Flying Mobs? Will they be flying between islands? Will they agro? Will it knock you out of the air? Will it cast "heavy" on you as they follow you to land? Will you be able to battle in the air? (I would love intense aerial battles!) Lots of potential, lots of questions. I'm sure they have not even shown us the best parts of 3.0 yet, they will be saving some surprises for December's FanFest. I'm getting really stoked for this expansion! and we still have the Golden Saucer to be released as well as content coming to that with the expansion.

Are the new areas in the x-pac seamless? I've heard from some people they're not zoned like they are now?

O_o if you fall, do you fall to your doom? That'd would make battles near the edges of islands fairly intense, specially if they had knockback abilities.. xD. Dark and Demon Souls stair fighting ftw lol

Imo it would make sense to have flying monsters but I wonder if they will give you any defense to them, Chocobo Scorpion kick to the dragon's face for 1 second combination blitz to praying to the twelve and sprinting. Also bit of an aside but for the December holiday.. Chocobo Sleigh in the sky? :P

Expansion has me pretty excited too, and the Golden Saucer with Chocobo Racing? Farewell job, farewell world - you've been kind but I need to feed, breed, and race my Chocobo now.
