Adding the sense of a larger world with danger

Eorzea seems small.....Really it's not that small...but ease of travel makes it seem that way. I was thinking back to other games, and how like in Final Fantasy VII, you would get to a point of no turning back. At least not for a while. Climbing the icy wall and just going up. No going back down now...... After reaching the journey's end, you really felt accomplished. You had to stick it out and just keep pressing forward. So I had a thought.....

What if in the future of FFXIV, we got zones that had conditions for leaving them. Maybe storywise. We'd need to keep moving forward with our goal. I know people probably love the fast traveling everywhere, we've been spoiled for a while. But I would like to see less aetherytes moving forward, and this loss in convenience could leave us vulnerable as we move about possibly giving some really dangerous zone that we can't simply just run to a quiet spot and teleport out of. I don't know...something. I just feel like we get around too easily and we don't stop and appreciate the environment around us in the game. I want that sense of accomplishment for reaching someplace that felt so distant and required effort to get to. Thoughts?

I really don't like the idea of being stuck in a zone like you propose. But I do agree that Aetheryte fast travel remove the thrill of travelling and exploring. I guess the fact that the game is split in many instance instead of just being one big world could be part of the reason why, but I did like traveling by foot, before unlocking all the aetheryte.

But I guess convenience comes at a price :/

What I see is that mobs loose aggro too easily. If only they could really engage you without letting you go, that would solve a lot of the ease of traveling through places.

As someone who came from games where mobs NEVER leashed, let me just say that mob leashing is making the best of a bad situation.

But I mean more like they would cast slow on on you so you can't run away as fast.

most of them do, heavy is annoying, but it really is just that. it doesn't seem dangerous....i want to have to really think about traversing through the area before i do it. i'm not afraid of any place in the game.

I hate leashing in this game. Its far too short a range for this game and is not varied in its application to open world mobs. I'd rather have the open world contain a variety of mob behaviors. Make some leash and others not, with some more with a provoke or draw-in, and perhaps a few that use a distraction/status effect to run away.

what about mobs that didn't have such simple attacks, but could behave more like dungeon bosses or primals?
