It would be nice if we could start downloading the patch during maintenance, though. Having to wait until game servers go live to even start downloading sucks for those of us on crappy slow connections. Especially if the patch is really multiple GB, has that been confirmed?

I just based that estimate in the last patches. I think the last one was like 1.7gb. ; ; But I COMPLETELY agree about getting to start the download early. Don't other online games have that as an option? Even FFXI, I think.

XIV does as well - except this one, due to the popular complaints about not being able to buy a house, is causing a complete change/upgrade in hardware and software, therefore you can't download the patch until they're back up and update pushed out to us.

Why are they turning off the machine that we download the patch from in order to update the game servers? Those should preferably be two physically separate sets of servers.

It's how SE has always been honestly lol, with XI..DQX...and now XIV. The update is likely on the lobby servers already but they're probably waiting to get everything back up and running. They did it during pretty much every update to the servers during XI's 12 years that accompanied a major update.

They didn't take their "patch server" down. It's still up (pinged it a while ago), it just isn't forwarding us to the download yet. The patch is in fact mirrored on different servers (my downloads have been coming from an Akamai server since the first of the year).

It's like the launch of 2.0 all over again! lol

Seriously, though, SE should have done what I originally thought was happening... One maintenance for the data expansion. One maintenance for the actual patch. This has just been (and will probably continue to be) annoying and confusing.
