That can be a single player game where the only person whose time you're wasting is your own. They couldn't have kept XIV 1.0 going with the few subs it had. Like someone else mentioned, some of the subs at the end were just because of the legacy campaign. Around the time 1.0 was active, SE was already not doing good financially.
They did a smart move and cut their losses and tried again with a different approach. And that approach far exceeded what they had hoped for. They had to make more servers and restructure them because of just how much of a success ARR was and is. And ARR has brought them out of their financial hole. And it isn't like they're in it just for the money. They listen, and as you said yourself, put content patches out faster than any other popular MMO. Even the non p2w cash shop is going towards further improving the content of the game.

I actually disagree on all points. I'm not going to belittle you for them, just stating that my experience is quite different.I remember a lot of trolling in 1.0 Rokien but i'll put that aside.
(I should state now that these are my views and I do not expect anyone to agree with them nor anything to be done about them. I am purely saying how I feel about the game. These are not to enrage people or to have people throw them in my face. )

1.0 may have felt like a land of potential, but to me that potential was a vast emptiness that had little to no chance of being filled. Much of this was explained at the beginning that what was done, was done in arrogance, that they would come back and 'fix it later' and it was a dated policy that hurt FFXI for most of its lifespan. Much of what content was done in 1.0 was not unique in any form, up until the dungeons, which really do not function any differently than what is now.
That Said, I feel like ARR accomplished what 1.x could not - use the same assets to crate two entirely different environments. Tamtara Deepcroft Normal and Hard Mode are absolutely two different dungeons. There's no way to argue else-wise.
I also disagree with the sense of community. I do beleive it's a matter of where you fall in line. The 1.0 community is still there, still around, and the feel of the game is different, but the social individuals that are there are around. However, the community is so much larger than it was before, therefore its easier to get lost trying to find your niche. Those that remained in 1.0 were more or less of the same dispositions, and so they congregated easier.
Now? The opinions and playstyles differ more. It takes more effort to find that group. But it's there. I've found my home here, at least. I feel people just need to speak up more to find their own groups, is all.
There are some fond memories of 1.x. However, I don't wish it back. There's a strong future here. And in spite of all of the drama that seems to unfold, the issues are relatively minor to 1.0's catastrophe, and in the end the game is still quite healthy and hale. Excitement blooms with each mention of a patch, and I'm looking forward to the next big chapter of the game.
That's not to say that 1.xx dosen't hold a special place in my heart. It does. But I'm ok to let it go.
In 1.0, you didn't have to group for anything, whatsoever, before the level cap. Compare that to today, where the game actually requires you to group for every dungeon throughout the main scenario. Sure, you can queue up solo, but I'll take that any day over shout-spamming "{Party} {Can I have it?} {White Mage} AF quest {Help me out!} 3/8 {/tell}" in Ul'dah for 2 hours just to get anything done. The sense of community that was around in 1.0 is almost completely gone and I don't think it will ever come back. You can now do all the content without any grouping as such. Before 2.0 if you wanted to kill HNMs you needed to get a group together (lets ignore the THM sololing everything :P) and go out and do the content. So it became a community game. ARR is a solo MMO now.
Thank you for a pleasant response.
It may be that I have been unfortunate since 1.0 and have changed myself. Maybe I just need to find a group to play with where everyone just enjoys playing the game and isn't just pushing content to get it done and get the best gear. Which is unfortunately what I see most of. But a response like yours does actually give me more hope for the games future than you would think!

Ya that part was not great but I feel like because of that you got to know people around the server a lot better and people on at your time than using the DF and not really getting to know your server at all.
But again I might just be remembering the good times and forgetting the bad!
If you're looking for compassionate players with a thrill for the game, and don't mind a little bit of hokey role-playing. On your server there is a Free Company group called We Say Hurray. They're a good friendly bunch who love having a good time and have players of all walks. Look up Sas Kiot on the server and tell him Hyrist sent you with a basket of Anima and dirty Magazines, and that I miss them.Thank you for a pleasant response.

^^; You're welcome.
In spite of me having strong opinions, I really, genuinely wish people to have a great gaming experience in their time. Our art medium is entirely unique and one of the few places where you can almost wrap it around yourself like a blanket and get lost in it. And I know how it can feel being lonely in that sort of environment as well.
It's been a LOONG time since I hung around WeSH in the FFXI Days but they're still the same silly old bunch they used to be. If I wasn't so heavily tied to Balmung and my Free Company there I'd go visit.
