I think the reasoning for that was something along the lines of how when marriage happens, it's great. But that greatness starts to die down and things can possibly start to get nasty and, all of a sudden, one of you has permissions revoked and/or all of your stuff is gone.
...and they're trying to find a way that works for everyone so players don't suffer the consequences of marrying the psycho-spouse from hell, whichever gender that person may be.
well.... don't enter into an arrangement with someone unless you trust/know/like them. That's all I can say about that.
I still think people do change. However when they do, the process is slow and steady. Most of your close relatives don't notice right away, but anyone who doesn't see you for a long time instantly notices.

In America alone, half of all married couples end up getting divorced, statistically speaking. In an MMO where a lot less responsibility is taken, that number, in Eorzea, could jump to 80%. Easily.
...and if there is shared housing established when that divorce happens, that could be a serious problem that involves a lot of whining divorcees losing items to the other divorcee. It's easy to say "tough luck" when you're not a GM or a developer.
I am hoping, however, that the devs think of a way to implement shared housing in just such a way that allows everyone to be happy. I just wanna make sure everyone understands what could happen if this isn't approached carefully.

This explanation is pure BS. The same situation exists with an FC where the FC leader could kick everyone on a whim and steal the house for himself, along with the FC coffers. One person is put nominally in charge of a house, that person can't buy another house, and that person can set permissions on the house. That person can kick others off the access list on a whim. Don't trust the person you're marrying in game, or want to protect yourself? Make them buy the house with their own gil if they want ownership, or you be the one to have ownership of it.
That is a social issue. Game design decisions are not based around social issues like that. If they were, the unexpected behavior where you can promote someone above your own rank and steal money from an FC's coffers would have been fixed by now.
