Not sure where you got this assumption from, but you release expansions when content becomes stale and you've hit a peak on logins and start to see declination of the active user base, its got nothing to do with hardcore players.

I'd also like to point out, even elitists have problems with people who are overly arrogant. People paint elitists in such a negative light that they don't realize that they just want people on their level or close to that as to not stoop down to level they've long since passed. People who take jabs at lower skilled players on a constant basis are jerks, pricks, whatever you want to call it. This description has now been called elitism which, can be a part of it, is certainly not mutually exclusive to the name.
Elitism and hardcore go hand in hand, unfortunately.
