Relic weapons have always been useful. Depending on the stats you choose during the Novus phase, they are usually BiS. Eventually, Yoshida said the current relics will (somehow) change into different modeled weapons that the Zodiac Braves once used. Just as an example, it might be something like Curtana > Excalibur, Gae Bolg > Gungnir, Artmeis Bow > Yoichi Bow etc.

If the quest is too much for you, there are other alternative weapons.

Guessing I glanced over this in my first post....

For the first few years of the game, the relic weapons in FFXI took 30+ people 1 year to obtain a single weapon for a single person. You honestly can't compare doing a some grinding here and there to the massive amount of actual farming, and time that it takes to complete a XI relic.

Animus - 4 weeks to get all the books with brayflox farming, killing mobs, dungeons, fates for the books
Novus - 1 and half months - did daily alex quest with some fate farming on the side
Nexus - 3 weeks - grinded whatever was bonus light at the time.

About 4 and a half months total to get the most current version of relic.
I like to add to this. The way I see the relic quest, I look at the individual steps for it's time, as well as the reward it gives compared to current content. SE has a habit of putting in a lot of catch-up content so players can gear up to current content (such as myth equips, hunts giving logs, and now ST dropping sands, oils and UAT like hotcakes.) To an extent, this has been applied to some of the relic steps; Myth tomes are a lot more available for zenith, animus and novus steps, the hunt introduced another way for novus to gain alexendrites. The odd one out is...again Atma.

When you did your Zenith, you had a 3 week period because of the mythology tome cap. Ilvl 90 at the time I believe was BiS, if not second highest compared to Allagan. The same could be said for unweathered where it uses solderly tomes. Now it's been changed that Zenith can be used as a "catch up" weapon with how accessible myth tomes are now.

The way it stands right now, relic quest as a whole kinda bails out as the "catch up" thing because of the Atma step alone being so varied. Animus and Novus take a varied amount of time since you can farm up excess myths and allied seals for their progress, and the same can be said for novus in regards to the light. It's just that until the introduction of nexus, there was really no point to the relic step other than being a huge time sink (it wasn't even BiS if you were certain classes, since their HA weapon was already stat optimized.) And even with nexus being introduced, we'd be talking about the nexus step now, not the questline as a whole.

Obviously you don't know coil. First you need a party capable of progressing, then progress. You wont be clearing coil in a week with a new party, unless youre carried. Then you have to hope RNG smailes on you and you actually see the weapon drop. It's no way near, start coil and clear in a very short time and have your HA weapon. We havnt seen all weapons drop yet, just PLD sword, BLM and WHM sticks and MNK weaps. And seeing as only 2ish weeks before 2.4, we wont see them all before we start proggressing on 3rd coil.

You mixed up Animus with Zenith and missed out Zenith XD. As Animus was released in 2.2 with the myth cap removal and introduction of Soldiery.

novus -> thx to hunt ~2 weeks for your first novus and like 5 min for your 2nd (since you can pre gather the alexandrite)
nexus -> depending on how much you are willed to farm per day: 2 days until 1 week

all in all the questline should take ~1 month if you start at zero and when you spend your most time with it
1 week for animus would be pretty insane. I've tried - but you're really not going to kill the 100 mobs in less than 2 hours (the max. 3 spawn mobs will see to that). Leves will take 30 minutes. The fates are going to take 4 hours on average to do all 3. Dungeons, 2 to 3 hours on average. 8 and a half hours per book (it's hard and unrealistic to expect less). You're looking at 77 hours for the 9 books not counting the farm time. One week seems obsessive.

I know ppl who did 2 books per day during brayflox sr times, with some effort its possible for even more casual ppl in 1 week now. 1 book per day is still easy manageable, then its 9 instead of 7 days, woho

Yes. Because no mmo has boring, monotonous and grindy quest chain that you do for powerful gear. /s

I think you don't know what an mmo is then. I have yet to see one that doesn't have this.

The difference between Nexus and any other end-game tier weapon is so miniscule that the effort and money you need to invest is barely worth it. For the people who lie awake at night having nightmares over sub-optimal DPS numbers while they're still clearing T9 anyway, sure Nexus might be the answer. For the majority of the playerbase (Even those who raid frequently not even mentioning those who don't) it's pretty far from necessary and only marginally "useful". There's nothing you can do with a Nexus that you couldn't do with a soldiery or HA weapon aside from push phases faster.

OP referenced Relic weapons in XI which were literal game changers with absolutely no equivalent in terms of stats (Largely due to sub-stats in that game making a huge difference with things like -25% magic damage taken being on the Relic Shield). FF XIV will never have something like that due to the way the game is designed, so the OP's point of how useful these weapons are is pretty valid for most players. So yeah, I agree with you that Nexus is the best weapon in the game when built properly - though its usefulness or significance as an upgrade is actually rather small when you think about content you can do with it vs. without it.

Curious and frustrating choice of zones for the atma stones makes the grind worse?

Part of the reason the atmas take so long to get is the dirth of players present the many lowest level zones we're forced to grind. Not enough to make fates spawn regularly!
Why oh why did you make us grind fates in the level 1-18 zones???
Also why leave out the highest level zones entirely where fates normally pop quickly?
