Are they only popular due to FFXI? This is the first time I've heard that these summons were popular.

Well Diabolos had some following from the other games I think. He was a legitimately great GF in FF8, which got translated into being the final bonus reward in FF6 Advance. However I think most of Fenrir's popularity does come from FF11, Fenrir wasn't particularly exciting in FF6 and in FF9 was sort of relegated to being "Eiko's summon that wasn't one you'd remember like Carbuncle, Phoenix, or Madeen."

First appearance was as an enemy in FF3, also as an enemy in FFVII. Appears in FFIX, FFX, FFXII and FFXIII as Garuda prime. Also in some of the cross over games, Final fantasy legend 1,2 and 3. etc

What's your point? I was referring to the actual summons themselves, not their appearances. XIV uses the exact same set of six elemantal avatars from XI for it's elemental primals. Given how much of XIV's content is lifted directly from XI this is no real surprise, which is precisely why a lot of people are disappointed Diabolos and Fenrir didn't get the same treatment...

Fenrir was a cool avatar to have in FF11 - it spoke of the caliber of the SMN to have him because it was a difficult fight and not every summoner had him.. The same could be said about Diabolos.
