First of all this is an awful long post for someone who doesn't care enough to respond to this thread LOL. Second everything you said here is all based on opinion and not on fact. I provided evidence for each one of my theories as to why I believe, that no matter how negligible, SS is still better than CRIT. The only evidence you provided on the other hand is that "herp to the derp, this game is like so softcore". Well no shit, but you aren't good enough, and will never play with people good enough for you to worry about putting offense before defense, no matter how passionate you are about wanting to be right.

Trust me, if you aren't casting stoneskin on yourself and you just stand there when you run out of TP (which happens with or w/o max SS) you are a terrible player and should purchase WoW immediately.

Getting all jobs to 50 in 1.0 is the most laughable epeen achievement to bring up as a show of skill. Battle classes could be leveled to cap in a single day (you could literally afk for the entire duration) and leves tossed exp at crafting/gathering classes (at no cost to the player!) so it was pretty effortless. Source: I'm a 1.0 player.

I've also beat Contra, Super C, Ninja Gaiden, Mike Tyson's Punch-Out, and Battletoads with 1 life so clearly I was min/maxing my skills years before you started playing 1.0 so I'm the final authority.
