I think you read it backwards from what he intended (then again, I could be doing the same). I understood it as a boost to the SMN depending on which pet was out. Not really sure, however, which stats could correlate to which egi in a helpful and balanced way.

For me, it seems he means to have an interaction with the pet via certain abilities and traits, which actually exists.
