Thank you! Someone who gets it.
Yeah, If i could go back and do my research, hell yes i would have done it. But how was I, or anyone else supposed to know? And why should anyone be treated poorly for something they didn't know they were supposed to even do?
There is a time I remember specifically being mean to what was likely a new player.
I was thrown as a replacement into story ifrit. And the tank was terrible. I would have been fine if the tank was simply unaware of the fight, and I woulda been fine if he was new to tanking (he was both of those). But my god, when he refused to listed to advice and just ran in seconds after we respawn, that earns him some mean words from me. Thank god I can heal ifrit story with my eyes closed.
And taking the high ground and trying to be helpful is absolutely the best thing to do, but nobody should fault anyone for not choosing to do so, because it isn't their responsibility. We're all playing to have a good time, and everyone has a different idea of what constitutes a good time to them and how much of something they're willing to put up with.in response to Malakhim-- I do fine with other players because I don't mess up anymore. I did fine with the players that actually took the time to help me figure things out. The ones I didn't do fine with were-- you know what. I don't need to explain anything... this isn't even ABOUT me.
this whole post was about new players. I was just giving an example of my first time, and how shitty it felt to be treated so badly for something I didn't even realize I was doing wrong. I didn't realize I was supposed to study up. Many new people don't. I'm just saying we should HELP them, even if they don't ask for help (and be nice, and not condescending about it)
As a healer, I get frustrated as hell with crappy tanks, since I'm the one generating all the enmity.. but I put my big girl pants on and bear with it and offer a piece of advice here and there for them. I don't whine about how they should have studied or should have known, because it's too late, they're already in my party.
You're right. This isn't about you, but your experience resonates VERY well with the experiences of a lot of new players, specifically the parts where they just skip through all the tutorials that are designed to help them learn their class. Hell, if I never took the time to read through one of my active help windows that popped up some time I hit around lvl.10 on my pugilist, I never would have understood just what greased lightning is and how to properly take advantage of it, as well as positioning myself for best results on different abilities. I would have been a total detriment to my party in any dungeon or raid!
But I DID take the time to do it, which a lot of new players do not, and while the playerbase in general doesn't mind being helpful(even though there are plenty of toxic individuals), they also don't go into games where they're trying to get stuff done to have to teach a potentially obstinate player how to play their class. Some people have other things to do(another thing common in MMOs). Once again, communication is key, and to remove you and your experience out of the equation, it's a problem that many new players have.

Man, I'm sorry other people have had bad experiences but pretty much everyone I've partied with in FF14 has been super chill.
Sounds like my first days as a smn lol i got yelled at so bad for not knowing what dots to use i almost started crying and wanted to quit :P but i had a very cool tank name Bull something who told the guy to shut it and was very helpful. To this day i wish i new what he was doing since he was my hero^^ anyways after that i never had probs but when i see rude ppl like that i try to be the bull of the party^^![]()
Yes, but I've noticed the way newbies are being treated. Obviously there are different circumstances in which a newbie found themselves not knowing what to do in their first couple dungeons.. but those circumstances are irrelevant when you are already in a party. Instead of trying to ask people to go back in time and tell them what they should have done, you can help them with what they need to do, and there's even nice ways to do it.
Pretty sure more than half the people who started their first MMO didn't think to look things up. I know I didn't with XI. Someone friendly explained things to me, and from there, that is when I started looking things up. Since then, every MMO I have played, I research things as much as I can.
If we're talking about preventing things, you could also say that if you don't want to have the risk of running into a new player, make your own groups instead of joining DF. Maybe you shouldn't have to because new players "should" do research first, but clearly, the world isn't as perfect and ideal as you would like.
I usually treat newbies nicely and offer advice and tips on mechanics. But if they dont listen, I stop being nice
[QUOTE=Serendipitii;2409587]This was my first MMORPG.. like... ever. So when I started, I had NO clue what people were talking about when they were speaking in lingo. My first few dungeons were a disaster, and it only made it worse when people were telling me what to do, using words that I didn't know.. and then getting mad when I wasn't doing it.
Wish we had ended up in a random dutyfinder, as I really like to help people who's new to the game/dungeons etc, and am more than willing to take things slow to let new people learn and enjoy the run
Hope you have better luck in the future. As I personally have had more nice people than rude during my runs![]()
Because...
You are not the only one doing this, by the way. Seems like a lot of people yoship is inviting to play this game post ARR are like this. Don't read tutorials, don't read tool tips, don't ask question, do whatever in dungeons, don't want to do mechanics that are usually done by their roles, ignore advice and instructions or say they're listening but not actually implement the advise they're given, complain about people giving out said instructions for being bossy and even cussed them out.
