Yep. People can be assholes for no other reason than they have no patience. This isn't my first mmo exactly, but close enough not to split hairs. About a week into the game, I ran my first dungeon and was cussed at and called names for playing on a console and struggling to target correctly. (I even had a keyboard. /rolls eyes.) A year later... you won't find me going into the DF without friends.

    Thanks, mmo vet-assholes! #pcmasterracemyass

    eta: I was playing dps

eta2: I don't seem to recall this game ever saying that certain classes shouldn't be played by those new to mmos/the game. How else are people supposed to know? Tbh, if I started playing now rather than during early access and did all this 'research' I was somehow magically supposed to know to do... I doubt I'd ever bother touching the game.

eta3: I bet you anything the first-dungeon-db isn't playing anymore. I'm doing alright and am having fun HELPING others. ^^v And based on my experience and seeing many complaints on the OF about this kind of thing, my FC has an anti-harassment policy that bars the use of any derogatory terms or anything smacking of "you suck". Doing my part to make the game a nicer place. <3

eta4: Oh yeah, one last thing... I've seen threads about people getting kicked from dungeons after they said they were new. Do you really expect them to keep saying they are new? Not me, I know they'd just rather keep their mouth shut.

Actually healer is what I started out as at first. I leveled my tank and healer equally. Healing came naturally to me, tanking didnt. I think the only issue i had was running out of mp, but i figured it out easily. Whenever I have a crappy tank in my party i take it upon myself to be more focused as a healer rather than a jerk to the tank. I remember the healer in my group first time tanking was the one talking the most shit, yet she wasn't even trying to keep us all alive and was wasting all her MP to DPS. I personally see it as a challenge when there is a crappy tank slowing everyone down. I once had a tank quit right when I got into the stone vigil and me and the two dps actually made it pretty far without one. it was incredible.

You have to understand where he's coming from when he says that.

The tank has to lead the party. The entire party follows him. He sets the pace of the dungeon. He needs to know the mechanics for every boss fight. If the tank dies, there's a pretty good chance the party's going to wipe.

    That's a lot of responsibility.

My first job to 50 was BLM. I didn't need to know the dungeons. Most dungeons I did without watching a video and I was fine. Just burn down the bad guys. lol.

My second job to 50 was WAR. Even though I had done every dungeon as a BLM, I had to backtrack and watch vids. I had to know the route through the dungeon. I had to learn certain mechanics that didn't really affect me as a caster. It isn't until the Coil DPS checks that you really HAVE to play at a high level as DPS.

Sooooo it would make sense to level up a DPS to 50 so you can get a feel for the dungeons and the mechanics.

    TL;DR
    Should people be nicer? YES.
Is your inexperience a valid reason to be an ass? NO.

Should you play DPS first? Yeah you probably should. If you don't, you're going to get a lot more hate than necessary.

It's interesting how folk justify being rude and unhelpful in game as actually helping the community, instead of showing players to be rude and unhelpful.

As tank, you are the only tank and people sadly will expect you to know your roles, but as dps it's a lot more forgiving as the whole party contributes to dps and damage checks are pretty relaxed in the early stages of the game while tanking does actually take a rather steep step up once you reach brayflox longstop. Especially on Gladiator as you don't have shield oath until 40.
I can't agree with this at all. Tank as a first class may be a tougher choice, but that's no reason to tell a new person not to do it. I started off tank myself, and even though I'm a veteran of many MMO's, I found it tough to handle initially. With that said, I feel like it got me ahead in understanding a lot of the game mechanics. I did go out and read guides on each dungeon, but that still doesn't mean that I did them perfectly. I did meet a few jerks that raged even though I said I was new, but they were a minority. Keep in mind that people that are entirely new to MMO's might not realize that there are guides out there for anything and everything.

@OP - I do recommend getting yourself a keyboard if you haven't already. "Hi, I'm new" fixes a lot of things. :3

    Also,

You can surely put the pieces together.
I'm not sure. I never had that problem since I had cure from conjurer class. Never need the NPCs to heal me.

This kind of stuff didn't go without consequences in the old days... back when WoW was still young the person doing the harassment would have to jump servers because they'd get proverbially tarred and feathered by the local server community. People can get away with murder using Duty Finder unless a GM gets involved, but there are a lot of things that a GM can't do much about.

I hope things get better for you. Try running it with some friends if you can.

Anyway, I think a few of you are missing that I was speaking of my past experiences AS a newbie. And that I'm bringing to light this issue that newbies are having. I luckily had a great FC to help me along the way and I've learned a lot since then. And I got a keyboard as soon as i realized it was necessary.
I just think it's important to try to be helpful and encourage people, rather than be rude and tell them to do something else.

No, he just keeps yelling at you to get a hold of the mobs, and then dies if you don't.

Agree there are some who are unforgiving to new players, then there are also new players who ignore or throw back insults to any advice freely given, even when given in a polite, non-demeening way. One example. I joined low level roulette as WHM. Tank was only hitting one mob (24 GLD) and ignroing rest, so one heal, and rest flew to me. Asked him politely to use Flash, explaining that it will hold all mobs if he spams it 2-3 times. Numerous deaths later, and still no recognition of what I had said, even using auto translater go no form of recognition, never used Flash once.

Party ended up kicking him and another new tank joined, who took advice and we cleared easily the rest.

Point is, there's not just vet players with bad attitudes, there are new players with as bad attitudes also. Get enough of those in a row and you can see why tempers start to fray.
