Yea I'm not feelin this statement either. The other day I spent an extra 20 minutes in Tam-Tara teaching a first time THM how to limit break. Everyone else in the party (random pug veterans) were also totally on board. The first time he did it on a group of mobs he said "WOAH!!" and was super giddy. We made sure he got all 3 comms too.

C'mon. We're not all bad. 9/10 times we're just sh*ty to other veterans who have different ideas of how to best screw in the lightbulb. And even then, its just misdirected hostility from not getting the right drop in coil for 9 weeks in a row.

2 Things to get into concept here: To be a beginner in FFXIV and a beginner in MMOs.

If you are not fresh to MMOs, you will know some terminology, you had experience into another game etc..

    - then you can start with whatever class you want in FFXIV. Since the time the game went LIVE, no one was an Old Tank with experience. Still the first dungeon needed to have one Tank, one Healer, 2 Dps. Everyone learned and failed and tried again, succeeding, and better better at the mechanics and knowing their skills.

If you are a complete beginner in MMOs and you start FFXIV (very nice choice btw ^^ ) : I would suggest to get on Forums, search for tips specific for your role, then you try it out. As lots said, a DPS at first would be the safest bet for you to learn (and there is lots, overwhelming, moves, skills, quests, guilhest (what is that?) leves (huh) I couldn't even find my way in Ul'dah ) - You can still start as whatever you want, it would just makes it less steep for the learning curve from a DPS standpoint.

Then you will begin to get into a comfort zone. This is where you can start an alt class, to see if you gonna like it. Same applies, Search tips, get clues from your teammates, etc..

Best thing you can do when starting a new game: try to get into a Guild/FC. With virtual friends, it's easier to get along and they will usually forgive more your inexperience than the standard duty finder, or PF with a bunch of lol

Don't let a few bad apples ruin the entire crop, as it's worth it.

    See you in the game!

I think the majority of MMORPG veterans are nice to newbies.

It's just that they have to speak up, people are not mind readers.

And to the one who said you didn't play a decade ago because of toxic community. It has become worse, a lot worse.

I am by no means new to MMOs. However, this game was a culture shock for me. I came from a game where I mained a tank and that was all I played. Come here and try tanking... completely different. To say the least I was used to HUGE health pools and being self sustaining (my tank on other game was known as the solo 12man) so I could solo dungeons in roughly an hour. Not so here. Also this game is highly movement dependant which I wasnt used to either. Ultimately I stuck with it and though I still get flak from other players I play for fun. Don't let people get to you. It will actually make your task harder. You'll never please everyone.

Again I saw that under the sun the race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong, nor bread to the wise, nor riches to the intelligent, nor favor to those with knowledge, but time and chance happen to them all.

I mostly blame Duty Finder being the main issue here when it comes to bad behavior granted people may have different result small %. If possible I would recommend getting into a free company or party finder were you have some control over who you party with.

Just because you're new to the game or new to a dungeon or encounter doesn't mean you shouldn't do your research or look up what to do outside of the duty.

    What's the alternative?
    1. Ask your party to talk you through, step-by-step, your role, the mechanics, and common tactics (group pulls, using AoE, marking or not marking targets).
Instead of taking a few minutes of the new player's time outside of the encounter, the rest of the party must now pause and wait for the explanation and hope you understand and carry it out.
    2. Advice-free and discussionless trial-and-error at the expense of the party.

Let's go through the pros and cons.

Having the party explain to you in-game, inside the duty is better because:
    1. The party can tailor their advice based on their perception of your ability, equipment, and knowledge.
    2. The party can feel nice about sacrificing their own time to help others.
    3. You create a warm and welcoming environment that drives nonsubscribers to join the game.

Researching and learning about the game online, outside of the duty, is better because:
    1. You are reading at your own pace and you aren't pressed for time.
    2. You can go to as much detail as you need or just skim the basics.
    3. You can actually visualize what needs to be done when and by whom, using videos, pictures, or text, depending on your style.
    4. You aren't using up other peoples' time.
    5. You are supporting FFXIV websites and communities, which in turn drive more interest in non-subscribers to join the game.

This game's online resources are not popular partly because there isn't enough demand for them. If we promote a culture of being prepared and polite about other peoples' time, the out-of-game world of data and discussion would be much more expansive and informative.

This system has proven effective in Japanese servers, where new players take it upon themselves to read up about their roles or ask about encounters outside of the encounter itself. I think it's time we start adapting some of that for the betterment of English servers.

With so many resources available to new players via the internet, it's hard to sympathize with people who don't bother looking-up information before jumping into something completely new to them. As far as them explaining to you what you should be doing; YouTube. I'm not trying to be mean, but it's honestly just so much faster and much more convenient for the other three to seven people in your party if you just do your own research.

I've never done GLA class quest, but doesn't the NPC in the lv.10 class refuse to heal you if you don't keep control of the mobs?

I always try to be nice to new players. I was new once too so I don't penalize them for it. I actually kinda like explaining things to them too, makes me feel helpful lol. We want people to keep playing to keep the game alive, so we shouldn't be horrible to new players and put them off.

I hear ya @Serendipitii. I am new to MMO's and FFXIV. I love playing this game but I have had a rough time with others in dungeons using duty finder within the main quest. I have been the newbie in all of them. Most of they talk about me in chat but I just take it as constructive criticism because I ask what am doing wrong.
