    It was indeed good times.
My first time entering Qufim Island was certainly an "eye opener" as well. Come out of the tunnel to see a line of dead bodies all along the small canyon... White Mages casting raise all over the place. Someone pulled a seriously bad train of mobs not long before I headed out there heheh.

I liked it for the atmosphere (music, graphics, and art) but it was just an everquest clone at heart and I didn't really like the gameplay. It wasn't ambitious or inventive. So far I've played FFXIV for almost as long and enjoyed myself more.
Yep, lots of people hated it. Lot's of people hate WoW (raises hand) Lots of people hate Aion (Didn't at first, do now) Lots of people hate lots of things. I think fish tastes like crap and so do thousands of other people so, Sushi must be a terrible business and a really bad thing right? That explains why there are only 5 Sushi restaurants within a mile of me yet there are 1 McDonalds.

Fact of the matter is, these days, MMO gamers are in majority 15~25 years old and part of a generation of Riddalin raised A.D.D wall-bouncers. WoW and the more current batch of MMOs cater to that. They create 75% solo content so the masses don't leave or lose focus 30 minutes into a group. FFXI catered to more social dynamics so until you established a social group the game flat out sucked for most people.

In WoW, Aion, LotRO etc the only thing keeping you in a group is finishing a raid that you will be locked out of and have wasted unless you are with close friends. In FFXI and hopefully XIV you became/become good friends by sticking out a marathon exp party session with no ramifications other than socially perhaps.

Sorry I and others Hijacked this thread. Again my vote is for Al'Taieu!

I'd prefer loading screens to massive wasted space and samey-looking areas.
omg every time someone says theyd rather have zone lines than wide open areas i feel the urge to point out we have both zone lines and wide open areas. FFXIV is not open world, it is the same as FFXI only with larger, emptier, blander zones.

... and just in case someone thinks they're going to be snarky and call BS on my numbers (500k players, etc)... Here's a reference taken from Wikipedia. It includes citations for each piece of info.

As of 2006, between 200,000 and 300,000 active players logged in per day, and the game was the dominant MMORPG in Japan.[4] As of 2008, in an announcement for three additional expansions in development, SE noted Final Fantasy XI still has a strong user base of around 500,000 subscribers.[5] In April 2009, Square Enix announced that the total number of active characters exceeded 2 million for the first time.[6]

If that's not good enough for some, then fine...

Link for 500,000 active players well into its 6th year. The population held steady into its 7th year as well, however, the census is only updated once per year.

Link for reference to 2 million active characters as of April 2009. The relevant bit is the 4th heading down from the top. Even bearing in mind that a lot of players have as many as 4 or 5 characters (a main and alts or 'mules'), that would still place them between 400-500k active subscriptions.

Anyway... wanted to provide that in case anyone decided to question my references.

... Another zone I was thinking would be beautiful to see something like with XIV's tech is Caedarva Mire. I was going to say something like the canyon-like areas of Attohwa Chasm would be awesome... but then the Northern portion of Thanalan is already kinda like that.

I don't know why XI gets such hate, yet when XIV gets hated on and suggests something from their other game..I don't know. I mean I still watch the occasional video my sister makes of XI even though I personally play it, since it fun to see what other people do.

XIV could have been so much more if they didn't stray from the basic formula of what XI worked, and a topic like this isn't really a suggestion topic, but to spark only nostalgia but to hopefully give the developers an idea of what people enjoyed in terms of Atmosphere an d design.

XIV is very vanilla, that much is true and there's still hope for the future, yhough if it was set up the same way as XI was with a different setting and did well at launch, no one would be complaining -- People only complain after the fact that it failed and others reference XI; I mean before XIV's alpha testing people were hoping it borrowed x,y,z from XI and made it better lol.

We had two rites of passage in XI.

First was Valkurm. Everyone's very first foray into group play. If you couldn't hack it there, you weren't gonna get past it. Pretty sure that the vast majority of the players who hated the game quit at Valkurm.

Next was Qufim. That place was a rite of passage if I ever did see one. It was a major stepping stone to get to the level of obtaining an advanced job. It's where static parties were made. And most of those who were not fortunate enough to find statics either sat in Jueno for hours on end or quit altogether.

The rest of the game was smooth sailing.

what i loved about Zi'tah was, although it did look pretty good for its time, that it was attached to... um that crag zone with shikigami weapon. those two together had such a strong mysterious and cohesive look together.
if only FFXI was open world. those two zones would be even more awesome together.

    - is proberbly high up on every ones list.

Grid should have been v2.0 of it (seriously - better graphics, nice relaxing song and some epic scenery was all we needed). But unfortuantly it ended up like a less interesting Yhoator jungle.

Here's hoping the zone redesigns deliver something like Zi'tah 2.0 out of the bones that are "the black shroud"

Funny how people want nothing from their successful MMO to show up in the game they're trying to save. My personal vote would Grand Palace of Hu`Xoi.

Because if I wanted to play FFXI, I'd play FFXI (considering how unimpressde I was with the game the first time around, that's not going to happen). I'd rather they go with fixing their original vision instead of playing up to the FFXI refugees who want FFXI with prettier graphics.
