I am in the same situation as Maluban. I fed according to this post and instead of getting Loom Brown, I got Hunter Green. Any advice on how to proceed to Soot Black?
Update before the time was up I added more apples 3 to be exact with feather change, the new color is void blue. It's getting darker so it seems i am heading in the right direction going to give it some more apples and pears. So after feeding my royal blue bird 1 pear with feather change message after 6 hours it did not change color. So i gave it 2 more pears and tried to give it an apple as well got the feather change message on both pears but not the apple; after 6 hrs i got storm blue.
Just fed it 3 pears with feather change message and one apple with feather change, we'll see where it ends up.
-7 apples first and second didn't give feather change, the next 5 did
-5 pears all gave feather change
Will Report back in 6 hrs.

Keep in mind, what I am doing right now is just experimentation. I am still have uncertainties on some parts, especially the message procs. Anyway, using my spreadsheet, here is what I came up with to turn your Hunter Green into a Soot Black chocobo:
One more thing to keep in mind, your chocobo is unlikely to have those exact RGB values for Hunter Green so some slight variation may be needed to account for this.
Wow! Thank you for the response! One more quick question, does it matter what order I feed the fruit? I assume it makes a difference based on how it is moving on the RGB scale but I'm not completely sure. Can you clarify?Keep in mind, what I am doing right now is just experimentation. No, it shouldn't matter if it works as assumed right now since it's simple addition and subtraction. Again, I am not sure if you need to feed just that many, or feed that many until you get that number of proc messages for each feed.
End goal is Soot Black and I'm starting from scratch today, having been growing my own supply of fruit before starting. I should have way more than enough of all 6 fruits to get to any color. I've seen a lot of varying opinions and results in all of these posts, and can't keep track of it all. What is my best course of action starting at the default yellow?
Stuck in ink blue/kobold brown/deepwood green I managed to break the loop and get soot black!
The process was to use the right "lighten" fruit to try to increase without pushing it to lighter colors and then use either known result (Deepwood green to soot black or kobold brown to soot black) in 1 fruit and it worked.
I got the feather message in 2 fruits from Deepwood Green - sent me back to kobold brown and kobold brown with 1 doman plum got me soot black
My quest has ended, good luck to all.
Disregard it did change color.

So after six hours the new color is Ink blue. I am going to try what Shinjii did to get black from ink blue, so giving my chocobo a pineapple. One Pineapple fed with feather change message, will report back later!Update before the time was up I added more apples 3 to be exact with feather change, the new color is void blue.
