So far every single story step has been a sort of upgrade, I don't think it's that crazy to assume this one could be as well.
Considering the upgrades have never put it at or above the level of what are supposed to be the best weapons at that point, yeah it's at least a little crazy to just assume it.
The Zodiak weapon questline has always got to do with something that have a meaning and relation to weapon enhancement
=> Atma upgrade requires you to slay crap load of monsters from fates to obtain 12 essences to enhance the weapons
=> Animus upgrade requires you to refer to ancient records and attempt to perform similar deeds done by the Zodiac twelves, which is killing similar monsters the twelves have slayed.
=> In Novus questline, the NPC told you that your weapon is very much powered up and the only way forward is to use a special method of materia infusion using a sphere scroll, and light bending Alexndrite, harnessing the power of battle-class materias into the weapon.
What would the next step be? I don't think it is Demi-materia because it is totally about crafting. Novus make use of materia but they are battle-class materias, different from demi-materia which have no meaning in battle terms.
I can't really tell what is the next most sensible story to the next upgrade, but there is certainly one that made sense story-wise but would be quite a hell to do.

Spiritbond your Novus weapon to 100% - creating such a strong bond with your weapon that is essential to further its growth.
And guess what? IL110 gears only spiritbind in SCoB.
GGWP if this is what comes next.
I made my Novus the week right before Patch 2.3 and so far it is only 28% spiritbonded

Hmm, now that's an interesting idea. It would certainly be a "grind" running SCOB over and over and over to SB the Novus. And we know that the lockout will be lifted in 2.4, which makes that more possible (I'm sure everyone remembers the endless T2 groups).
On the other hand, the relic upgrade path has always seemed like an alternative to raiding. So requiring that would lead to a lot of complaining in the forums.
For a change...
Whatever they choose, I'm eager to get working on the next step!
kill trash in t6, go out, kill trash again, over and over again, done
and the best part is it can only be done after 2.4 release so ppl dont have to cry someone could get a better weapon pre 2.4
but well, I dont think they'll implement it this way, some ppl already acquired 50%+, they want all ppl to start at zero, either they have to reset the % for everyone or they'll add something else

I think everyone should cut the argument over whether the next upgrade will have an IL (and of course, actual stats increase) or not. It is getting old, it is getting lame. Not targeting at you of course, but in general.kill trash in t6, go out, kill trash again, over and over again, done

Like I said, anyone can complain about every shit in this game. I couldn't care for that. If there is an IL upgrade you can have ppl crying it is better than HA weapon, if it is an atma-like cosmetic change you can have another bunch of ppl crying doing so much for a cosmetic upgrade. This is really getting silly, wasting time on something that can never satisfy both side of the camp.
And anyways I have also said it won't be impossible. The sec stat cost rule was already broken with Novus. Back then I was with the camp that strongly believe that the stat cost rule holds with Novus, but I was proven wrong. I am not surprised if any sort of rule gets broken again.
In any case I don't recall T6 and T8 trash actually gives spiritbond. Previously I was trying to bind some of my old i90 crafts that I made that didn't get to 100% before I purchased the soldiery weapon or HA drops, I don't recall T6 and T8 trash give me any bond at all. T7 trash certainly does, but really pathetic level.
Even if you were to do it in 2.4, it would take you crap load of runs to bind an IL110 weapon to 100%, and if SB to 100% is required, it won't be the sole criteria. Probably getting Novus to 100% SB and ask you to find something else for some sort of infusion thing (noted that Atma/Animus/Novus always require you to obtain something or some essence of sort etc to enhance it), so again, won't be a simple matter.
I was surprised to hear it is 2.38 already. Novus is 110 and the HA weapon is 110. I thought a better weapon would be part of 2.4 when the last Coil installments comes. Either it will be more secondary stats or a grind taking long enough that the Hardcore players have their 3rd Coil weapon quicker lol. If you think it can't get worse, look forward to their plans. I bet it can get worse haha.
The High Alagan weapons are iLvL 115. Whereas the Novus is indeed 110. The patch in 2.38 is likely to bring the Novus weapon up to an iLvL 115 stage as well.I was surprised to hear it is 2.38 already. Novus is 110 and the HA weapon is 110.
