And the end result is:
Not too far from what I was after! A little more green, a little more blue... should be good. :3

Sorry if I sound stupid, but from what you are saying, only when the message appears, you are triggered into a new range. So this means that EVERY feed is definite to change the numbers in the RGB spectrum, the only rng is the amount it changes by. ANd the reason why people take different amount of fruits to get the feather message is because of the rng in the amount of change in each feed. Am I interpreting this correctly? You feed them all at once, and continue to feed the amount even if you trigger the "growing new feathers" message.
What is happening behind the scenes is you are shifting your Chocobo's hidden RGB values around (even if you don't see the indication of new feathers). Each dye appears to have a range for each color (I.e. 25-35Red, 100-120Green, 150-160Blue for color "X") and if all three numbers are inside these values you will active that plumage color on your next change. When you see "growing new feathers" message, you have effectively pushed yourself from your current color range into the new one.
Thanks! I'll update my results here periodically.

Finally got to Dalamud Red! After not getting any procs for 18+ berries, I waited a day and went back and got the 1 proc needed to change from Blood Red > Dalamud w/ 3 berries. I'm so happy!

So to make sure i have this rightDesert Yellow > Raptor Blue > Othard Blue > Regal Purple > Bark Brown > Soot Black.
I pretty much fed only berries, pears and apples so as to balance them out whilst decreasing all 3. At the end I used a plum.
Going by the same method I used from Bark Brown, I would suggest the following:
Berries x5
Pears x5
Apples x7
Plum x1
Make sure the stable is in Good condition. Start feeding berries until you see new feathers. From then on, count ONLY the fruits that resulted in new feathers towards the above recipe.
Good Luck!
If i feed him 10 berries but only get 5 new feathers i move on to pears do the same for pears apples and plum?

I'm hoping this is how it works. I'm trying for black and I'm in this Ink Blue > Kobold Brown > Deepwood Green loop. I'm hoping that if I just continue on this loop, eventually the RNG will skew the numbers just enough to get me in to Soot Black. My fear was that my numbers were stuck at a point where it was impossible to get Black without fully restarting but I'm gonna continue on this loop for a while before restarting. What is happening behind the scenes is you are shifting your Chocobo's hidden RGB values around (even if you don't see the indication of new feathers). Just wanna give my findings. I went for snow white and did it in small stages to see how many it actually took.
Going from the x15 Plum, x6 Pine, x12 Val method I broke it up and see how it went.
1st Attempt - Cream Yellow
x4 Doman Plum, x3 Valfruit, x5 Ciel Pine
2nd Attempt - Bone White
x4 Doman Plum, x3 Valfruit, x1 Ciel Pine (Pine did not offer "Growing new feather" notice at this stage but added it for sake of original method)
3rd Attempt - Snow White
x5 Doman Plum, x3 Valfruit
Total = x13 Doman Plum, x9 Valfruit, x6 Pine
Yup!
For example, I started feeding berries and the first 2 had no messages. I got my first message on the 3rd berry, so I counted that as the first successful berry. Every fruit after that gave me the message.
If you end up hitting Ink Blue again try x2 Pineapples and x1 Valfruit.I'm hoping this is how it works.
And you did that for every fruit? like let's say i feed 5 Plum but non give me a message i keep going to i get one? If so then i understand this now and i just keep feeding to the number add up to what you said,.
Sorry to keep asking when you explain it just want to make sure 100% i'm going to do it right. Going to see what happen in 6hours.
