That's the purpose of this thread, and, if the numbers of likes in this thread is any real indication, it would seem that an entire server would not be a viable option. However, I vehemently oppose the notion that I see repeated ad nauseum on these forums that "FFXIV is a PvE game." It's a modern MMORPG and PvP is a large part of that formula, not just something slapped on to it for a little diversion like gardening. You are definitely right that converting a server would be an awful decision and I don't think anyone is arguing for that (I'm certainly not).

Really, I actually hoped every1 would support this, this is really sad. I mean what's the matter, does fighting non-scripted non-npcs frighten people this much? Hunts will actually make sense on a pvp server, also. They could implement stuff like guild vs guild ( or I guess fc vs fc in our case ). Theres just so much they could do with this, and theres no reason to be against it because you can simply choose to not play on a pvp server T_T
I don't even want it as an option...for anyone, on any data center. I think it leads to very unsporting conditions, and griefing. And bullying of 'lower levels'. Furthermore, there is absolutely no reason for it outside of griefing to exist in this game's Open world. All open world mobs, hunts and fates are 'shared'. And content like leves/maps is 'instanced'. There is nothing to compete over in the open world. So coming up and punching someone because you can, overall, even if on a server where people 'signed up for it' is just annoying them. This game is very much a 'we're all in this together' kinda game, and it encourages working together ...not icing someone out gathering as a botanist simply because you can.

Not only that, there is a cooldown in the open world for switching from class to class. So even if people wanted to switch from BTN to DRG to take out that hoser that started attacking, they'd have to wait to do so....and since gatherers aren't known for HP's well, that likely is a death sentence. And the 'well they could change it so you could just swap/dol's have def/immune' Seems like too much to do for something that is not needed to begin with. This isn't even accounting for the 1v1 concerns that already pop up in the PvP forums for the content we have. (This game is not balanced 1v1 and expects people to pvp as teams....so in order to make open-world PvP work, ALL classes on ALL worlds would undergo major adjustments....or nothing would change and then PvP worlds would whine forever about the 'OP classes' and how they are unfair).

The PvP content we do have however, makes sense. One is a training grounds for people to better their skills, the other is a quasi-military objective non of the city stats want to admit to. It fits the lore and the game...but is also neatly packaged so that anyone who wants to can play, but they can also decide when and where...no 'God Dammit, I just wanted to gather 3 stacks of logs, why won't they leave me in peace!' or 'For pete's sake I waited 3 hours for this Fate to spawn, why'd they all have to gank me?'

Also, I am rank 39 Adder PvP: I have done plenty of Wolves Den and Frontlines, and I enjoy them...but I don't want to ever under any circumstances be killed while waiting on a mining node to spawn, or watch someone jump a level 6 ACN...because they can. And I don't think it adds anything to the game to be able to do such things. There is no reason whatsoever in this games current open-world format for anyone to kill anyone else. It's just a veiled attempt at allowing people to get vengance, or grief in my opinion. And would cause far more problems than it's worth.

    So yes,

    'No thanks' on any server.

You are assuming that it will just be FFA PvP. It could just as easily be level-ranged pvp - ie: can only attack people within x levels of you.

Some simple changes could make FATEs and Hunts mesh very well with a PvP server, which would make there be open world competition. For example, if it's faction-based PVP then you could make it so that only one faction can get credit for a FATE. If this were the case, then people would want to kill each other to determine who gets FATE credit. The same could be done for hunts.

Alternatively, they could add a PvP element to all fates. Killing players now counts towards progress on fates, or you are required to eliminate all enemy players before the fate can end.

Your gathering class issue is an easy fix. DOH cannot be attacked; if you switch to DOH on the field, you are vulnerable to being attacked for x amount of time (to avoid people switching just to avoid a person coming their way).

These are ideas I came up with in 30 seconds. I am sure SE can think of more intricate mechanics that would fit the world perfectly.

You can't look at it like that really. Only a small part of the community visits these forums; many stay away from them or just don't care about them.

WoW PvP Server Arthas, Horde Retribution Paladin, I go hunt and camp infamous ganker Moddex and Savagescott all the time. I dont agree with World PvP in FF14 and I am laughing hard at your idea of "only the pansies are scare about world PvP" crap. Keep it to yourself.

Unless this is your alt character, you seems like a new player to FF14 and havent done any PvP. In FF14, healers will always win at same skill level. Under World PvP scenario, there is no DPS job is able to output enough DPS potency to overpower healer's potency, but because of low skill floor of healer jobs, they can easily put enough DPS to kill you instead. At average ilvl of 90 (5000 hp), it probably only takes about 30s when their 2 instant dots kill you.

If World PvP becomes an option, all you are getting is either a rouge healer going around and dot everyone or a group of ganker rampage entire zone on single players or low levels. No, thanks. This is just not a game that have PvP in mind during the initial planning like FF11.

Indication is already there, you dont have enough players to support this idea to begin with. You can oppose the notion about "FFXIV is a PvE game" because it is what it is. PvP is not even in the initial planning phase of FF14 1.0, lore wise and system wise. It is until Yoship took over and PvP has its place in the planning phase of FF14 ARR, but it is still restricted by the original FF14 1.0 system mechanic.
