Point is, they're trying to fix something that's already been released. Much more difficult to do than prior to having it out on the world stage. Wasn't Yoshi-P's decision to put it out as-is, but he is attempting to fix it... With an audience.

But back to OP: What is a reasonable timeframe to have things either up to snuff or we take our ball and go home?

Well, when put that way, the answer is going to be different for everyone. Some people left within the first few months, before the big changes started. Others have left since then. I barely play myself, but continue to keep an eye on it, hoping for change for the better. I don't have a specific drop-dead date where I will stop caring. Either it gets going, or it gets shut down, I'll be watching until one or the other happens.

That being said, other games (WoW and Rift) are making major additions to content in the same timeframe. They have ongoing changes to how abilities and game mechanics work. They're in a constant state of rebalancing, and people aren't sitting around in the meantime waiting for the next patch to make things playable (and then saying how *this* patch was just preparing for the *next* one, which will make things playable, no really!). I personally feel that SE should have had more results to show us, well before now.

They need to be able to put out patches as fast as every other developer in the industry.

It's unfair to compare their speed in such a short time-span (there is a difference between changing existing game mechanics and outright replacing them, after all) but my concern is that even when we get to see long-term results, they are still too slow in comparison.

All I hope for is equality. They have an excuse so far, but there will be a day when it's showtime.

    Ah, I see.

For me, showtime is the day SE announces they will start charging me for my time.

Alas, I had to pay for my original game. I wish I'd have been lucky enough to score a free copy. Ah well, I do like my Adventurer's Certificate!

You can't really compare rift, wow patch/update speed to ffxiv since the games are in different positions. To use a analogy from the above post, adding a dvd player to a finished working car and rebuilding the entire car from ground up using the same frame, which do u think takes longer?

I know to players when they read removal of stamina gauge it looks like a simple update but ppl need to understand that the entire battle system was built on the stamina system, every skill, every spell, every class was balanced to work with the stamina system. Removing Stamina, redoing the coding, re-balancing the classes, re-balance the skills, create new down time for each skill, change some skills entirely, do the coding for auto-attack, balancing auto-attack for every class, all this and more probably takes a lot of time to do.

On top of the battle changes, there is the change to quests, leves, grand company, repair system all happening in this patch. for future patch we alrdy know they are working on airships, chocobos, materia system, changes to crafting recipe, ifrit battle, job system(these are confirmed things in the works and not stuff they plan to work on) and if u look at the work needed to create and add the changes, coding/balancing and all that then it makes sense why it took so long.

While i don't like waiting anymore then the next person, i do understand that its not a simple matter of creating content but rather the entire core system needs to be changed before creating content. Once the foundation is done, we should be seeing updates and content faster since they simple have to build on top of the foundation, no need to redo the entire foundation every time they create a patch.

they are still too slow in comparison..
Can't really compare their speed unless we have another MMO that failed so bad at launch, had the dev team replaced and was required to remake the game from the core without taking it offline.

Square said that list of crap will be done by summer. Yoshida said he will release more info on Chocos in August, and we seen some pictures of the 1.19 content already over a month ago (beastmen encampments in letter 9) so they are already working on it.

My guess would be 1.18-1.19-1.20 will all be about 4-6 weeks apart from each other.

Yes, at this time you can not. But relatively speaking, when year has gone by I still expect them to have changed and improved enough features to be in line with the content other games are getting, even if they are different in nature. So far this is not the case. It can change, and this is what I'd like them to tell us if it is the case.

What makes you think it won't take 3 months instead?

Because they told us things would speed up after 1.18 and they've been at about 3 months aparts. Speed up means "faster than the current pace"

what you fail to post is that it was 1.17a -1.17b - 1.17c now 1.18 so yeah stop trolling
the OP is trying to make people complain and moan about it but there were 3 patches before 1.18 and most was nm and ninja patch to jobs and other things because if you think 300 MB was just small coding then your sadly mistaken .
