Honestly I'm curious about what exactly you're referring to here. Making an alt and doing the first couple DoH quests?

You need to have your main class at level 10 for this before you can sign up for a DoH quest.
You'd be faster farming them the old fashioned way.

It depends on how efficient you are in the process of leveling the combat class and how far you wish to go with the DoH ones. Got someone to plvl you? 10-20min and you're done with the leveling part. No plvl? Spend around 1-2hrs, depending. If you only go to lv5 DoH classes, you're done in several minutes for each. If you go for lv10, might take you around 10-20min per once you get your routine down, but your shard yield is significantly improved for getting that far in each craft of the town. I walk away with around 2000 shards (various types involved) for each alt if I choose Ul'dah.
