It failed as both support and DPS. When Aht Urghan rolled around Blue Mage was trotting around on SMN's only selling points: decent spike damage and AoE buffs and Blue Mage put them out of business for a long time until SMN got Alexander. Everything pretty much hit rock bottom after that.
