Yeah, or the high level antlings guarding the paths out of Central Thanalan, which had ranged attacks and would one shot you if you were low level even if you tried to run after aggroing them.

It's the one thing I miss most about 1.0, I remember one place that looked like a shortcut to Drybone (rather than follow the path, there was a way south west when you came out of the little tunnel (circled area on this map)
I couldn't even survive through there on a lvl 50, never mind a level 10 player grabbing some new levequests.
Can I agree with letting the innocents die? I mean I find myself afk in the game just in random locations all the time because there is no real threat.. Not saying make every corner a death trap but we could change a few things to I dunno.. add a bit of spice or flare to the game. So people couldn't zerg hunt targets anymore.. so what. I think I would bother with hunt parties if there was a challenge behind it instead of it being a mob with a bit of extra hp.
They were around level 30. Only highlevel for level 10 characters on the way to camp drybone.
I don't DoL (which was mentioned in the Op); I don't care about those guys or low levels for the same reason you mentioned: unless something spawns on top of them, it's avoidable. But SE can't seem to fix rendering for their hunts. I don't lose Odin, I lose hunt mobs. I'd bet money SE used the gatherers/lowbies/ whatever as a smokescreen excuse for their terrible rendering. They can't make hunts harder if nobody loads.

They do need to watch out for the little guy a little bit. Anyone remember being MPKed by a group fighting Serket while leveling in Garliage because the massive poison AoE hit people outside the claiming party? It wouldn't be so bad if the hunts didn't spawn in choke points and heavy trafficked areas ( middle of Om'ghomoro Mines for example).
The current problems with the hunt are another issue, and I completely agree that in it's current state adding new mechanics would be useless without fixing the underlying issues. However, the fact that they don't even seem to want to explore adding boss mechanics to elite marks seems ridiculous to me.
It's ironic too how you'll get random trash mobs in XI that can behave like a boss at certain levels without some of the unique boss abilities, but here they don't want to "inconvenience" the player. I mean..heaven forbid that poor botanist decides to walk too close to a rampaging chimera or something. The current problems with the hunt are another issue, and I completely agree that in it's current state adding new mechanics would be useless without fixing the underlying issues.
