SMNs, Contagion, and You

I notice that sometimes my pet will not switch to my current target after the target they are attacking dies unless I specifically press obey/sic again on my current target. Is this the way it is supposed to be? I only switched to SMN rather recently, and I see this sometimes happening and sometimes not.

Egis shouldn't , should auto attack when aggroed on normal. Choco companions don't though I think.
