If you as a SMN are doing equal DPS to a BLM currently, you are really really bad at playing your class.
If you as a SMN are doing equal DPS to a BLM currently, you are really really bad at playing your class.
While I realize it does not come til tomorrow, the math is pretty self-evident. You give the king of AOE, a class that can easily parse over 1300 on trash dungeon runs, the ability to put out the same single target DPS as a melee class, and ST dps equal to or over the other magical class (SMN), .![]()
I am a Black Mage, but I have played with decent SMN's. (and many poor ones that do FAR less damage)
If BLM's are doing the same damage as you, you are simply under performing in comparison to them.
Currently for almost all coil/priamls (except T4/Garuda), a "Good SMN" will out dps a "Good BLM" by a significant amount.
I hope it is a lot close after the patch, that's the whole point...
SMN has far superior utility (SC-Raise in fight), nobody would chose a "Good SMN" over a "Good BLM" in a raid team as thing stand, a lot even exclude BLM's totally, many BLM being asked to roll SMN for T9.
I've talked about this in an earlier post though... SMN did in fact get a buff this patch right along with blm. Bio is going to cost less mp (really good for turn 8 or any other fight where you want to spread your dot love around like ifrit ex). SMN maintains the same advantages they once had in the past. While I realize it does not come til tomorrow, the math is pretty self-evident. You give the king of AOE, a class that can easily parse over 1300 on trash dungeon runs, the ability to put out the same single target DPS as a melee class, and ST dps equal to or over the other magical class (SMN), there is literally no reason to bring anything else. Before you start with the SMN can raise... so what? Most would say, don't die in the first place. I am not sure why they went with a straight dps boost instead of manipulating their abilities and procs to increase dps which is what should have happened. But I hope the devs are keeping a close eye on this going forward. It was mentioned by the devs that all single target DPS were getting a boost to compensate, and we did not. SMN pet boosts were a joke and Garuda will still be the only one used. I fear a huge issue of balance is about to happen.
For example a smn in turn 6 is not heavily punished by vines and is the only dps that keeps most of their damage going through the entirety of blighted bouquet, simply dot the bee, and refresh any dots you can on the boss and bam huge advantage. With the new garuda instant cast aoe you can use that to get some bonus damage on brambles under raffy.
In turn 7 smn can kite without losing much dps while hitting literally everything in the arena with dots (remember the bio 2 mp reduction?)
Turn 8 is a single target dps fest which you still have the advantage on especially since bio 2 has had its mp reduced, ifrit has gotten buffed (since people like to refer to garuda as an mp saver in this fight) and you probably can work shadowflare mia 2 in your rotation in this fight more often now. SMN much like bard can do every mechanic in the fight while losing little dps in the process, it just requires planning.
Turn 9 a smn isnt punished at all, I'd even call them king in this fight. You are not punished by positionals in the fire/ice/lightning phase. you can multi dot all 3 of the golems for huge damage in the golem phase, you can maintain damage while running and running away with meteors. On top of this you provide an extra body for thermonic beam, have a raise cause shit happens sometimes, have an improved virus and can cast eye for an eye more often. and the dragons practically beg for bane.
In levi you can double up your damage by maintaining dots on the head and tail + as many as the spumes as you can possibly juggle, smn is undisputed king in this fight.
Moogle they do well too, unfortunately dotting like you do in moogle does require your pt and yourself to actually pay attention.
The only real weakness smn had was endurance fights and frankly this patch helped you out there. So really you benefited. a good blm cannot keep up with a good smn/mnk/drg in this current patch.
For the record I'm an 110 blm with an i115 weapon and I'm an i110 smn with an i115 weapon. I play and enjoy both depending on my mood. I cleared coil first as a blm cause I was stubborn about it and then cleared it on smn.
SMN is a high dps, high utility job that isnt punished by mechanics and in many cases excel at performing them. With the buff blm will pull ahead in certain fights, but it should be that way since previously it was completely unbalanced. The only big kick in the nuts that smn gets is when they die with aetherflow recently used.

I think the potency boost was necessary for BLM even as I main SMN it doesn't bother me that this job received a boost. I've seen for myself how the DPS of BLM suffers, especially in titan HM/EX. Its great that now this job has a bit more utility as now they are needed. Not trying to sound elitist or anything but I agree that if you are doing similar DPS as a BLM then you are under-performing and not doing something right. As a SMN those DOTs really hurt the boss. The DOTs do initial dmg which is really low but the later dmg of 300-400 dmg per tick is insane. Plus if you RS and DOT the enemy it increases the dmg by 20% not to mention the egi has a signature attack with a DOT component that can tick for about 200-300 dmg and deals burst dmg and auto attks and can occasionally crit lol. SMN has in-combat raise and our DOTs can crit lol. The buffs to the egis were sufficient enough.
Lowering our MP cost, I'm guessing SE hopes that now SMN won't be afraid to switch egis mid-fight to optimize the usage of ifrit egi. I strongly believe that the order will still be MNK>SMN/DRG>BLM/BRD. This potency boost balances the classes well for now.

Totally agree with the above 2 posts.
BLM did not need an epic boost and it's not getting one.
We simply needed a bit more single target dps to make it a more worthwhile addition to a serious raid group, I expect we'll still be less in demand than SMN, but hopefully there wont be as much stigma about BLM coil2 dps.
As a Black Mage... I;d say there should have been more fights likt the 1000 Hartless one in KHII, you know fights with multiple enemies for a change so that BLM doesn't become the "lol you are a scrub!" class by endgame. Or maybe be based around ST instead of AoE like the other DPS classes.
I COMPLETELY disagree. I worked my butt off to lvl up BLM as it is my main, I have an animus and ilvl 96 so far. And what happened when coil T6+ was released? Suddenly no one wanted BLM as much in their groups. Why is that? Because unlike ALL of the other dps classes, we're the most immobile class. So I WELCOME this Single Target buff.
