Female Only Gender Locked Gear? Again?

Gear is not really gender locked any more unless you want to wear the female cloths on your male character. After you unlock the gear you can pick it up for male and female from the Calamity Salvager. Along with other things you have unlocked check it ou.

I think you've completely missed the point. People don't want to just own stuff, but wear it too.
