I liked using a Scythe as a weapon for DRK in FFXI. Could be that the 2H sword could be "Mercenary" and branch into Dark Knight and Rune Fencer ( :P ). Seeing how us adventurers are somewhat like mercenaries to begin with as we go where the gil is in the game.
Dark knight as a job based off a new class? 2h sword PLZ
Dark knight as a DPS job from MRD? scythe PLZ. Some of the axe types already look like scythes anyhow and the Axe animations would be appropriate for scythes.
Ronin - Then at 30 you unlock SAM and get a master; thus no longer a ronin. The ronin quest line could be various other ronin showing you new skills, etc.
Soldier, or Swordsman - pre-level 30 quest line could revolve around the player being increasingly frustrated with rules and order of being a soldier. DRK quest line could be the exploration of doing skill and magic that a regular soldier is forbidden to use. - They could portray DRK as a grand company alliance special force - that continued to expand after the defeat of ultima in 2.0. They allow the player to train as one, to confront the potential threats of the opening of ishgard in 3.0.
In short DK Job story should focus about obtaining...DRK quest line could be the exploration of doing skill and magic that a regular soldier is forbidden to use. - They could portray DRK as a grand company alliance special force - that continued to expand after the defeat of ultima in 2.0. and understanding the responsibility of having such power and why it should not be abused. Of course every Job needs a type of dark story to add to it and that will be having a Rival Dark Knight that seeks the DK power so he can abuse it which leads to our character having to smack some sense into this rival so he or she can understand the responsibility of use this power.
On that note they should make the Dark Knight Job story rival be a female character for once. All the current jobs have our Job rivals as males.

The quest line I laid out could do just that more or less. They could play of the majority of the quest line about the thirst for more power - forbidden power. By the end of the line, they could play out that the abuse of their newly obtained power is leading down a needlessly dark path; that the player must focus on not abusing it. For the sake and stability of eorzea.
