    My original answer to this concern was to say, have abilities be summoning whatever components you need, but they'd be temporary items that disappear when you log out or untradeable. But if you're going to go to so much trouble, why not just develop healing abilities, but I don't think that's the idea here...

    Actually SCH has been pretty spot on compared to lore of other games. SCH is intended to be a war strategist (Lore says the diagrams in it's books are actually strategies, plus reading the final quests show that the SCH of the past were strategists that came down with a sickness that decayed them into Tonberry), which is exactly what it was in FFXI during the Crystal Wars. FFXI's SCH had the power to enhance it's White Magic and Black Magic using the white/black books and because SCH has access to ACN attack spells and it's own curative spells, it's safe to say SCH in 14 is still the White/Black mage we've known and loved.

    Then look at FF3. Although it was fairly useless, it did help for one boss fight to determine it's constantly changing elemental weakness (using strategy) and used books as it's weapon of choice

    ^This. Had a very similar idea about Time Mage.

    The only difference in my idea was that TiM was alot of supports, no attacking power whatsoever. a 'party animal' only that could do nothing without a party.

    |The Alchemist idea would work well, just have it so they don't consume the item as a trait.
    For more specific skills e.g dps etc use consume grenade ash, shard, etc.

    The time healer would work, by disguising general healing skills as reverse, warp, and you can have the DPS skills as demi or other gravity inspired skills.

    This is what I was thinking. Alchemists have been known to have the "Stock" ability, which allows them to use several types of potions without consuming them.

    If Time Mage became a healer branching off from the Thaumaturge line, I'm curious how it would utilize the Astral Fire, and Umbral Ice system. I suppose it could use the same principle, where heals would become much more potent with fire but cost way more MP. This means they would have to be using attack spells to set up heals/regenerate mp, which could be interesting.

    Like you said they could make cures more powerful with more stacks of fire. Or they could make Fire make Regens AoE and single target cures stronger and then Ice would reverse that so Ice would be single target regens and AoE cures.
