I was helping with a map where 4 gargoyles spawned. I think the WHM I was with thought they could heal through their AoEs, as you might usually be able to do world enemies, but, nope, these need to be taken seriously. The WHM died, but I finished off the fight, switched class and raised them, at which point they were able to loot the chest.

For me, the risk of losing the map is worth never doing them alone.

Actually, the maps show a beautiful icon on the bottom left part of them, showing that they're intended to be done solo. You can't really blame people for trying to do them alone (until they die or are warned by another player, of course).

I blame them for trying to solo and then coming to the forums to complain about not being able to face-roll them.

Why couldn't they place a warning that this wasn't face-rollable content!?

    Damn, today's gamers...

Yes, I realize it's not just about dying but about there being a repercussion to the failure (i.e. potentially losing your map). That is equally pathetic.

I'm all for harsh consequences without giving any warning, but lets put them in the whole game, not just in a single type of content. And not just for dying and all that, but for dropping the DF queue, etc.

Anyway, what I find ironic is that you're defending this... when you've said in the past that you've opted out of this content because of the grind for the atmas, and because the content is not fun. So, as it doesn't affect you anymore, the rest of the playerbase has to adhere to your flawed and prepotent opinons regarding the issue discussed in this thread? So it's fine if, because of a bad design of the maps, others have to mindlessly repeat content to get another map just because, apparently, writing a few extra words is too much to ask? Alright, seems fair and not selfish in the least.

It does say that the map itself will be lost when you open the chest though... Like it's always done...

Yes, but it doesn't mention anything about the monsters being more difficult to the point of having OHKO mechanics, not previously seen on the open world (besides Odin and Behemoth) or solo content. It's clear that no one is expecting it the first time.

The problem is not just that it doesn't say anything, but that you have a precedent even for the same kind of content where it warns you of what lies ahead, so people assume that it's not going to have special surprises,. That's it, until they die. Losing the map is the annoying consequence of that, but not the "real" issue at hand.

Anyway, this has set a precedent and I'm sure that people will be more careful from now on when they attempt any kind of new content. That's both bad, for what I've been explaining, and good.

I think it'd be fine if upon death you lose the map but can repeat the quest again (i.e have to run roulette again and the daily only disappear when you get your map alex) But i guess code-wise it'd be hard because the quest is not tied to the map... then maybe they can put the map part of the quest and when you die you have to rerun roulette... the quest ends when you get the alex from the map.

These shouldnt need a party.... the Map says 1 instead of Peiste that says 8.

The Novus maps require 1 person to do. The map itself show for how many it is intended for. Aside from your chocobo, which allows you to take some hits to the face if it's a healer, getting additional bodies will make it easier but they only get 500 gil for their troubles which isn't much at all unless it is those 2 spawns I mentioned.

I'm going at my pace which is faster than the people I play with and solo doesn't affect me. Out of the 7 maps I've done for myself and the 6 maps I've helped with Mythril Golem and Cyclops are the only real challenging ones to have appeared.

The Biclops wasn't that hard to solo (as WHM i98) but it is significantly more challenging than the regular boarskin maps (which are intended for fresh 50's unlike these which are obviously intended for people that have relic animus).
Haven't come across the golem yet
