Personally, I still prefer the Mats over the Gear, but that may be because I got it all.

To clarify since you mentioned not knowing about the potion chests, there are two(? Off the top of my head) side chests in each dungeon that contain nothing but X potions, X ethers, and hi-elixirs. The point isn't to make what you want go away. It's to make what you want get out of the way of the people who don't want it. Because, even in the "shared loot table with a chance for both of us to get happy"- We have 8/19 chance to even get an equippable item(Including belts)- which will in turn be rolled on by everyone, probably for seals, where as you essentially picking up loose change makes the boss chest essentially a waste of time.

Yes, there are people who enjoy the materials. That is fine. There is no benefit to your materials cluttering up the loot table though.
