Out of all my time on FFXI I never ever saw it in the /shout channels, only rarely in /tell. In this game it's like I get spammed via /shout and /tell and by multiple bots each time I zone anywhere.
It clearly is a blatant issue when you see it so openly, it's almost as if they control the chat channels and not Square-Enix.
The RMT spammers have taken to Yelling and Shouting as well now. Maybe one option would be for SE to allow moderators who could delete these accounts straight away instead of waiting hours on end for something to be done. Its getting to the point where the only chat will soon be confined to FC's and Parties. My Tell has been off for ages now and it makes me look ignorant. Not Happy.

In my all honest opinion, the problem lies squarely on the PLAYER BASE not SE. Sure SE has the burden of having come up with a solution to this problem. You would need to be dense to say they are not doing anything about it. Coming from FFXI, it took some years from the creation of the STF (Special Task Force) to finally cause the gil spamming shouts in Jeuno and tell spams to stop. Of course they implemented anti-RMT measures in FFXI that helped curtail the RMT activities, which I'm sure they implement here. If you like to know what some were, research them.
But at the end of the day, this all falls on the player base. STOP BUYING FREAKING GIL.
I'll go even further, I have a total of 4 characters, two each spread out between the NA and JP data centers. Guess which two get spammed day and night with gil spam, guess which two I had to rearrange the chat logs so only tells appear in it's own log, and guess with which two I have to deal with over priced items on the market board.
By this I don't mean to excuse the japanese player base, cause I'm sure that they are those that buy gil.

A volunteer force with the ability to delete characters? Yeah, no thanks, too much abuse potential (yes, sure, can be reversed, but still). I would rather have a volunteer force that can mute a spammer from public channels and tells (and doing so automatically sends a report that are quickly checked). The target gets no indication that they have been muted (so the spambot won't detect it). Party, linkshell and FC chat would still work. Abuse is still possible, but at least it's not as bad as having to wait for character restoration.
Besides this, we're also in the middle of the month. SE cleans house at the end of the month so about this time the rmt are back in full force. In another week or so we'll get blessed silence before their numbers recover.
It also doesn't help that we're nearing summer and more people will have more time to play. So we'll see more adds.
No more cast bars for Bard! Thank you, Yoshi-P! All hail our lord and savior!

People buying gil is the biggest cause of the problem. It's not SE's fault that there's RMT spammers, it's the fault of those players who buy gil. While SE is going slow about dealing with each case of spammers (and bots, too), they have to investigate each account. If there was a way to convince people NOT to buy in-game currencies, but I'll settle for public floggings of people who buy gil, or are apathetic/sympathetic with purchasing in-game currencies but have never bought any themselves.
Remember, a gil-buyer's account is the future account of an RMT spammer.
I LIKE the fence. I get 2 groups to laugh at then.
Why do people keep stating the obvious? All I want is better filtering options that's available in F2P games.
Well it is S.E's fault that reporting sucks and doesn't seem to work and the available options to block them sucks as well.

Because people are dumb as hell and act like it is SE's fault (and/or that they're in league with the RMT spammers).
I'd settle for a "Report for spam" option when clicking on a name that mutes the offender, much like what Blizzard has for World of Warcraft. As it is, the current method to report spammers takes me a couple of minutes. But, it could be worse. Could be how reporting is done in Aion (which they've never improved since beta).

People been complaining since beta, if nothing has happen since then it's never gonna happen.
Just go into the General Selection option and un-click the /tell box and you won't get anymore tells.
Because you and everyone should know by now, the tell function is useless it's only for Gil seller operations sooner you realize this the better.
I can't even talk on it to someone without getting blasted by a RMT 20 times before they logout quick before I could blist them.
then they switch characters then do it again, I was using the "Busy" for a bit to stop them but it also stops friends from messaging you also, so basically the tell option is very broken.
I reported them before, seen the very same RMT spamming me for hours one day nothing was done, so yeah just shut off the tell option SE isn't gonna fix it anytime soon.
