None of the big fish are good for anything (yet), save for the Silver Sovereigns. Those can be traded in for the Forager stuff. The others are purely an achievement item.

I've tried to catch the Slime King with base Gathering 342 / Perception 283 -boosted with Tomato Pie (15/6) - so 357 / 289 in total - but I got "Fish gets away..." message 3 or 4 times (the weather and bait was OK). Slimy bastard! I think I'll make a stack of Spinach Quiche (this is now the best Gathering food) and use it while fishing.

Right now the max gathering you can get is:
- from gear - 348
- from company action (Live off the Land II) - 10
- from food (Spinach Quiche HQ) - 24

And perception:
- from gear - 289
- from company action (What You See II) - 10
- from food (Landtrap Salad HQ) - 19

Your max gathering from gear is not 348, it is only 348 when you have the FC buff on, same thing with perception, it is only 289 when you have the FC buff on. So you might want to look at your calculations again. But then again your max gathering with the FC buff is still wrong because you still can add 1 more gathering and 1 more perception to your legs and feet, but a lot of people don't do that because it would just be a waist of materia.

My Gathering without any buffs is 347, and my Perception without buffs is 286. The only gear I don't have max melded is my Waist. Huckster's stats above are correct. Your stats might be lower if you are still using Raptorskin accessories instead of Gryphonskin.

As a side note, I need some information from ya'll. I've been noticing an extreme amount of ** (G) that I have been unable to catch any HQ specimens of. Even with 371 Gathering, I still lose bait (rarely though), even from fish that have a much lower Gathering requirement, such as 301+. So I'm asking ya'll to rummage through your lockers and post what fish you have caught HQ on. My list is as follows: Armorer, Junkmonger, Octomammoth, Syldra, Navigator's Brand, Storm Dancer, Bloody Brewer, Moldva, Mud Golem, Silver Sovereign, Caterwauler, Oschon's Print. I've caught all the ** (G) NQ's. Thank you.

Just wanted to pop in and say that I have 307 gathering, and while this list shows that the Goldenfin needs 345+ gathering to get, I was able to get him with no problems..

Might even be my luckiest catch ever. Sat down prepared to wait a while and miss a lot, but 20 seconds in I had him. He was my 2nd catch

Anyone knows the lower possible Perception stat to be still able to catch HQ Silver Sovereign? I have Gathering at 307 but Perception quite low (213 atm without any buffs) - the reason is that it's on my alt which I've leveled up to 50 only to get two Fisher retainers so I don't want to spend too much effort on (over)melding it - all I want is to get new rods and hats for all 3. Or do I need to get gathering to (over) 310 to be able to HQ it? Thanks in advance for any tips. So far I've got 35 NQ ones in 3 (IRL) days, about 10 Mahis (2 HQ) ... Looks like I will kick myself to finally craft some HQ gathering food.

If you can catch NQ, you can catch HQ, but recommended is right around 250 (with lowest reported being at 227)

I was fishing Syldra today and haven't checked this thread numbers yet and they scared me quite a bit. I was able to get Syldra on first try she appeared with 339 Gathering using Landtrap Sallad as food. Are you sure some numbers are correct? Also thanks for all the other information, helped a lot. But that 356+ on the Rivet Oyster is really a think, it is possible to get it without using FC bonus? Because food for me will be up all the time for sure. Thanks again.
