Time mixed with randomness just screams Mario Kart syndrome to me; you can get lucky or waste more and more time until you get the results you want, regardless on what you do or how good you can be.

I wonder where the insult is... There indeed is no sense of progression as far as atma goes. It is indeed way less than rewarding. It does indeed not only recycle old content - don't tell me those who are farming at least for one atma weapon now have not done any and all of these FATEs a dozen times over; it does not add anything new either - a few lines of text and some recolors are not new content. Add to these the fact that whether sheer dumb luck, to such an extent, should even be part of 'character development', is at the very least debatable in itself. To everyone saying to just keep spending time on it: there is quite a lot else to do in-game (not to even mention real life): leveling/gearing up classes, helping out friends, dungeons/raids, trials, dailies, treasure hunts, generally just socialising - this shouldn't be the only thing (chore, really) to focus on for whole days' worth of breaks. To those mentioning the alternatives: yeah, kudos to everyone with static groups / actual friends playing the game; for everyone else: good luck (but no pun intended, really) getting through Coil T1-5 to be able to as much as attempt the 2nd Coil, or getting through Garuda/Titan/Ifrit EM to be able to as much as attempt Leviathan EM - especially with 9 out of every PF being "only kill exp" (the remaining 1 is a static looking for an experienced 8th member). See the problem?

But the real issue?
Like other things, it also has been explained that SE chose the subscription model becase it helps them plan ahead and helps them churn out more new content more frequently. And what do we have? For the most part, HM/EM reworks of content that has been there since 2.0 (if not 1.xx) - and let's not even mention seasonal event 'rewards'. A questline that doesn't even utilise any rework of a basic feature of 2.0 - how many times has the community expressed its negative opinion about (far less amounts of) FATEs (much less 'forced' onto us)? But they keep emphasising how much they listen to feedback.
I can't help but do feel the insult in there, actually. This is a game, it's supposed to be recreational, it's supposed to help us have fun. But lately I find myself asking "am I having fun?" every single time I'm farming low-level FATEs for atma, which I only really do while waiting for the DF. And every single time the answer is "no". Because it is more of a chore than anything else. People weren't having fun farming FATEs when they were just leveling up a class - when it was an option to achieve that. Now it's a must because there's no alternative to upgrade your relic weapon, something that's part of your storyline in a way, something you've (actually) worked hard for already.
This is my feeling every time i do fates for atma. Just on a 3/12... abandoned it.

I am at 7/12 and have given up after 3 days with no Atma of the Scorp. If they said grind X FATES per zone, I would be more ok with that over the random nature if the event. They need to have a bad luck safety net where after doing X number of FATES, you automatically get it. people would be more understanding and accepting if they knew they had an upper limit to their task. Unless substantial changes are made, I would not expect many people to get more than one atma weapon done if any at all. We have lots of new PS4 members in our FC and they are very apprehensive about atmas after listening to everybody talk about them. This is starting to damage the reputation of FF XIV by scaring new players and THAT is bad for subscriptions. Atmas have become a financial problem for the game and must be fixed ASAP.

I don't think Atma was meant to be the only thing you do when you log in to play. If you do it in short spurts it makes it much more tolerable.
personally i gave up on atma after seeing a tank clad in almost full high allagan, which is my new goal lol the pld sword and shield look 1000x cooler than any variant se could possibly make for relics which so far is no glow/glow/no glow/brighter glow. unless they make novus higher than i115 i wont bother with my relic anymore for once again coil weapon is superior

I've been stuck at 8/12 for over two weeks now. Got my first 8 in 3 days doing no more than 4 fates per zone, than nothing... idk how and i don't care anymore. I do 10 fates tops a day now and if i get one cool, otherwise I'll just wait for the help that hopefully will come when novus is implemented. Not like I need a stronger weapon anyway.

Atma grinding is like hitting yourself in the groin with a hammer until you have an orgasm.
