    I was under the impression that 14 was either set in the void or in a shared universe from the rest of the series

    Whilst there are a few elements in the Final Fantasy series that DO suggest a shared universe (Gilgamesh being one, and his travels through the void), for the most part each numbered entry is it's own original story in it's own original universe.

    Final Fantasy XIV is very much a fanservice title, and continues to provide us with references and cameos from previous entries. However this really is nothing more than fanservice, lol.
