I don't think I'm against this. The game seems to follow the logic that everyone can wear cloth, but you need special strength or skills to wear heavier armor like mail or plate--skills and strength that only certain classes and jobs are capable of. This makes sense to me, but I wouldn't be against some special sets of armor-like gear that mages can wear, similar to the lightsteel set, which flat out admits in the name that its not heavy armor.
