It's a legitimate equality issue.
You don't go around assuming everyone who plays a "thief" class in a game is "black" because that would be incredibly silly and racist.
Much like you shouldn't go around assuming everyone in a game is a boy because that's incredibly sexist

It's not an overly difficult concept to grasp. If people are totally cool with obvious stereotypes then all they do is promote that stereotype

If you are stuck dealing with any form of discrimination on a normal basis, you obviously don't want to have to deal with it on an online game you play to escape the fail-ness of the real world.

So why does avoiding sexism matter?
Because sexism is a form of discrimination
And in the modern world, thanks to science, and people finally being somewhat smart, that is no longer acceptable. Whatever the form.
