But first, make sure that you don't have frame buffering turned on with vertical sync turned off--maybe your system is 'too good' for ffxiv and is dumping huge amounts of extra frames every so often...

Fixing these problems is hard, and PIX won't tell you much besides device load since directx is used pretty much exclusively for device interfacing in SE's engine... At least I think so. Class is starting, but I'll check back afterwards

    Good luck !

When you have this problem, do the frames stand perfectly still, or does it just keep you from moving/doing actions?

Some people have reported network stability increasing when switching from wireless to wired networks (less dropped packets, which FF14 does not handle well at all). If you are on wireless, you might try that. Alternately, upgrading to a high-end wireless router has helped a lot of people. As for the HDD issue, you have a lot of programs installed that appear to have functions that run in the background. I saw noticable (albiet not significant) improvement by turning off all my auto-update software (nVidia, real player, quick time, adobe flash, java, MS Office, Master Suite, etc., etc.) and setting those programs to not load when windows starts. Regardless of whether or not they are actively downloading, that is just more stuff that has to get written to the paging file and shuffled around when not in active use. Might be something to consider.

Looks like you hit the wrong process :/ gotta set it to skip 1 or it will record stats from the ffxiv updater window

But, it doesn't seem like you'll have to rerun it-- your problem is 100% network related if you can still move around when it occurs... Getting a better router is a good idea, and same with turning off the evil background programs that steal RAM just so they can idle...

Check your router settings and see if you can enable QoS (quality of service) for FFXIV. There's a lot of port numbers to add, so you'll need a router that supports defining a range of ports to be prioritized. Another option is to simply set the MAC address of your Ethernet / wireless adapter as the priority connection to the router--both options, however, require a router that supports QoS. If your college laptop has something called (i think) WMM and your router supports that feature by default, then your laptop might be getting prioritized over your desktop.

Other things to help your connection would be disabling BITS via the 'services' tool in the administrative tools section of control panel, though this will disable automatic updates for windows. Another, more advanced, option would be to grab a packet sniffer to see if any background programs / services are utilizing large amounts of bandwidth periodically. However, disabling the odd-looking 3rd party background programs like origami mentioned would fix this without the trouble of going through tons of packets.

That's what always messes me up, but the login is executed as a child of the updater thread for some reason... which is why I had to edit the mini-guide above earlier xD The login is ran as something like a DLL call I guess, but it's most likely not a good idea to pry into the workings of it... :3

That would be soooo nice... methinks SE kicked themselves in the butt for signing on with playonline for ffxi--as they probably took a decent cut out of their profits. But playonline had the resources to direct data so much faster than SE does, and data routing just isn't the same without them Now we have to rely on our ISP's to ship data internationally where they usually try to save money by sending packets out in 'bursts'--so we lose a few ms's by not having the dedicated channels that playonline offered.

And why do I have such a long rant on SE's new in-house servers? Because that's all I can think about while I sit and wait 3 minutes to move 7 items into my retainer -.-'
