I vote no. I personally think that an archer in melee range shouldn't be able to attack, just like a gladiator out of melee range can't attack, but unfortunately they've already decided against that.

That would make soloing with Archer extremely difficult unless you could keep the mob bound and you would need to be constantly running away from it to stay out of melee range.

Speaking of binding, I hope they fix ranged attacks being on every single monster. It makes binding useless in 99 out of 100 situations.
But, all melee jobs have ranged attack weapons. And unlike FFXI, they actually land easily!
So lets assume we will attack with our fists(lame). Will damage be determined by our hand gear equiped? I always thought bows were 2 handed and it just seems odd to use one of those hands to punch things.

They landed easy in XI, you just needed to be skill cappedBut, all melee jobs have ranged attack weapons. And unlike FFXI, they actually land easily!

Which brings me back in the day when I would lvl throwing with pebbles and kill giants with them xD
most melee jobs had C-D, if that, rating for throwing/ranged weapons. No, they did not land very well on anything worth fighting. Anyways, you don't need to cap any skill in this to be good with ranged weapons on any melee job. Every class from Gladiator to Pugilist can equip ranged weapons from the get go and have very good accuracy with them.
I was just commenting to the person who said ARC shouldn't get a melee attack because melee don't have ranged attack, when in fact, they all do.
This is the correct idea. The rest of you are wrong. WRONG!
However, let's think about it further. An archer needs to use both their hands to operate their weapon. Why on earth would an archer punch something and risk injuring that hand? If they're going to do anything, they should be kicking, not punching.
The ideal solution would be a snare ability that can only be used in melee range.
