Not to be nasty but players in FFXIV don't usually call a player character a 'toon' - this is because it has negative connotations with WoW, plus it's not considered appropriate due to the more realistic graphics in FFXIV (it should be noted it was never considered acceptable in FFXI either, and a lot of FFXIV players are FFXI fans as well). Most people just use the word 'character' or 'PC' to describe their character instead of 'toon' - which results in muffled sneers when people who are not aware of this fall into this social faux pas. Don't take it personally, it's just one of those things.![]()
Most people really dislike the term "toon", if used for a Character. To give you an example:

For some its actually that a "toon" refers to a Character like from WoW or Wildstar Onliine, which does actually look more "cartoon'ish".
Thanks for the explanation. I've never played WoW. FF14 is my 2nd MMO. My first being Forsaken World. There, people referred to their characters as toons or characters. No one seemed to take offense at either. I hadn't realised it was SUCH a big deal for a precious section of the community. Basically this. We're not playing Space Jam or Who Framed Roger Rabbit. Toon is an old EQ/WoW term that should be left behind.
I told you to stop! Now I'm all red![]()
Back in UO, we called our characters avatars.
Lol. I remember playing the original D&D rule set pen and paper games back in '82, along with Runequest, and then AD&D. I'm also Aussie. I just roll with whatever. To me, it's just a word that's easy to type, and I have zero vested interest in the use of the word, positive or negative, despite having a very long role playing heritage.
Just seems to smack of artificial snobbery to me. Just "one of those things" as y'all are saying.
Anyway, it's cleared now.
Who cares what they are called?!
Why is this discussion even here?

Indeed I would freak out too if I saw that many toons!
That's exactly what it is. He/she can just get over it.Lol. I remember playing the original D&D rule set pen and paper games back in '82, along with Runequest, and then AD&D. I'm also Aussie.
