It doesn't matter which side I am on for this, but calling either side of an ethical debate misguided can hardly be a step in the right (or left) direction.

I of course would have said the same thing. It is a matter of ethics and morality, and I don't see how insulting someone's ethics can ever be the right way to go. If you want to sway people to your way of thinking, you are much more likely to with showing them what you think is right about what you think, not what you think is wrong about theirs.
