That's the point, if they allow something as ridiculous as lalafells marying highlanders or roegadyns then not allowing same sex marriages is completely stupid. There's no lore excuse for it, they just dont want to because they are afraid it might stir controversy.
I have 3 Fantasia potions on my character so I plan to sex change, marry to my bf character, activate every possible event/mecanic/dialogue/item possible, and change back to male just to see the system collapse on itself.

I can't say I am very educated on the state of gay rights in japan
I think being afraid of stirring controversy is a very good reason to not allow it. Don't misunderstand me, I support same-sex marriage and I hope it's included, but it becomes a little awkward including these things for a company this size. FFXIV already failed once and they certainly wouldnt want bad publicity because some homophobic crazies could have a fit over it. Every single person working on this game could be fine with it, but you know there are people out there that love to distort and abuse video games over anything they can. I remember when Mass Effect came out for example, there were people calling for it to be banned for it's 'interactive sex scenes' when...that wasnt even a thing in it. Can you imagine the way those same people could react to this?
'Online video game supports gay pedophilia' and shows a roe married to a lala, they'll probably claim the game lets you play as a child and supports devil worship.
Edit: I will also add I really dont know how same-sex relationships are treated in japan. Maybe they're more open, maybe they're much more conservative which puts even more pressure onto them not to do it

"a very good reason to not allow"... Same Sex Marriage, or marriage at all? If controversy is the issue, then they shouldn't have marriage whatsoever. They're going with the lesser of two outrages (by pure numbers) but you've got to be crazy if you think it's not opening a can of worms in the first place.I think being afraid of stirring controversy is a very good reason to not allow it. The crazy people that "love to distort and abuse video games" will do exactly as you said. Any way they can. They have plenty of ammo with Primals and the Twelve (religion) and lore like the "Puff Puff Brigade." Paying attention to them above a passing glance takes your eyes off your intended audience.
Oh god I'm gonna be hit on all the time![]()
The lesser of two outrages, yes, by a large amount. The thing is if they don't add it, the only people who will complain are the players. If they do add it, people who don't even play the game will jump on it to attack it, and cause an uproar over things they don't even understand. Primals (evil gods/enemies), made up religions and such are pretty standard in fantasy these days so complaints about them dont pick up much steam in the long run. But same-sex marriage in the modern world is unfortunately much more recent and controversial."a very good reason to not allow"... Same Sex Marriage, or marriage at all? Saying 'a good reason to not allow' was probably not the best choice of words I could have made, so I apologise. I do feel that the more this topic is included in mainstream media and entertainment, the better, as each time it's brought up, it becomes more widespread and accepted little by little. But I do think it's unfair to say 'oh they're just afraid to add it they dont care,' because it's an awkward situation to be put in as a company. I also think the attitude some people have that 'if I cant have it then nobody can' is very immature and puts a bad light on the community that wants it, and then does the same for the community that retaliates against that attitude.
Have they actually said they won't allow it yet? Maybe we should show we're all mature enough to have it rather than attack each other and the company adding this feature
But it's not ridiculous. If Roegadyn x Lalafell is ridiculous, so is Elezen x Miqo'te or anything else interracial. I obviously want same sex marriage too because I implied lalafell woman marrying roegadyn woman.
You overestimate how much attention marriage features in games get from people who don't care about the game. Marriage is really just something player couples care about and no one else unless there's exploitable buffs or whatever for min-maxing. I can't imagine FFXIV marriage quests and such are significant enough to attract the attention of outsiders. FFXIV already has implied homosexuality, Camp Drybone has a sleeping male lalafell saying "Take me, Raubahn... I am your sultana...". There are plenty of games that allow same-sex marriage already, it's not really controversial enough by itself anymore. The lesser of two outrages, yes, by a large amount. So basically, your argument against is that ignorant things will spew of the mouth holes of ignorant people. Um, I don't plan on getting married in game at all so I could care less about it, but I will add that Elders Scrolls Online launched with marriage and race/sex/species >.> doesn't matter and that caused a whole lot of NO controversy. At this point I think leaving it out would cause more of an uproar than just putting it in and having no gender flags required.
Plus it takes more work to code a "must be gender X and Y to do this" than just must be 2 people... *shrug* I think it's stupid. I too am ignorant in the ways of Japanese culture though so who knows.
