Seif is referring to the "Lock on" focus. There's another function which is defaulted to shift-f on computer, and.... I'm not sure what it is on the controller, but I'm sure you can do it. This adds another target health bar to your screen and allows you to have stats on two monsters at once. Very useful for fights like Garuda.

I actually quite like lock on, it makes strafing around AoEs quite easy, but it's situation at best. But that is neither here nor there. As long as you are targetting Garuda, you should be able to see her cast bar, which is just above and to the right side of her big HP bar.

no what we are talking about is click on garuda, push square, and on the bottom of the list is focus target, you can then deselect garuda and she will have her own separate bar which you can watch that is separate from your actual target

Ok so locking on is not needed? Just normal targeting without the diamond cursor.
Lock on happens by l3 button and it makes movement away from enemy superslow. So any round ground aoe is almost unavoidable. That's what I mean because I accidentally press it on all the time.

Right above Garuda's HP bar, it's orange and slowly fills up with a white line. When you see that, move behind her. Make sure she's casting Slipstream, though - she also casts Friction (slightly faster bar).

I've had that happen to me on PS3. A good way to handle it is settings > controller configuration and then assign l3 to do something else or nothing at all.

^ This should be advice for every controller user. I turned mine off after locking onto Titan EX and dieing. For the extremely rare situation you need to lock on just use the number pad 5 key.

No lock on needed. To focus target you have to your target selected, press square, then select Focus Target. You can also set a macro to do it and put it on your hotbar.

Finally turned that thing off. Good riddance. Should have found that toggle ages ago.
