You should be forced, because it's not a quest like the i80 relic and as such can be repeated. Repeat as many times as you like, if you're into that sort of thing. The atma stage isn't even the grind part of the weapons, so if you want one just for vanity... work for it.

What's so bad about letting us have the option to turn it off? Seems like a much simpler solution to a simple problem.

You can. You just have to
1, buy the Relic weapon from the Calamity Salvage.
2, get 900 myths to upgrade it to Zenith.
3, farm Atmas.
