That would be REALLY convenient for playstation gamers as typing is a pain in the arse. Though I have yet to try typing with a keyboard while playing with a controller. That would make it a lot better.

White Knight Chronicles I & II (PS3) had in-game voice chat, and it was both a blessing and a curse. I probably wouldn't use the feature if it were added down the line to FFXIV.

I actually prefer using my USB keyboard while playing on my PS3, as opposed to voice chat. Maybe it's just because I'm used to it from FFXI, but the biggest problem I've ever had so far is occasionally juxtaposing two letters in a word when typing in a hurry.

I wouldn't mind the keyboard at all so long as I could use it and my controller without having to switch settings on the fly. Can you do that in this game? I have the proper set up to enable me to play with both a controller and type with a keyboard. But can I just hit the touch pad and then start typing with the keyboard?

I have no idea about the touchpad, but if I press a key on the keyboard, it just shows up in the chatbox along with the cursor. It's really quick and easy.

I'm not sure how the PS4's touchpad figures into it since PS3 doesn't have one, but at least on PS3 the default is an option called Direct Chat. With that option set, you use the controller for everything except chat. Whenever you start typing on the keyboard it automatically shifts focus to the chat window and interprets your keystrokes as chat text.

(You can also turn the Direct Chat option off in Character Settings if you want to. That way you can use keyboard shortcuts, assigning actions to keystrokes the way most PC players do. Then when you want to chat you just need to manually select the chat window before doing so.)

Ah, I feel like that would definitely be the case for the ps4 as well, don't think they'd take it out. But that's good news.
